Quit Trying to be Like the Jones'

Drive-Thru Lesson 3 (of 4)

It’s the American way: Sports, Apple Pie, I-Pods, Cell Phones, Trends….. and trying to be like the Jones’.   There is one fast food restaurant franchise that has experienced tremendous success by deciding to Quit Trying to be Like the Jones’.  I am referring to America’s favorite Sub-Sandwich spot SUBWAY.  Just reflect back when the Jones’ of fast food were burger joints popping up on every corner asking  “Where’s the Beef?” telling you that “You can have it your way” and reminding you how many “Millions have been served.”  In 1965 a 17 year old kid named Fred DeLuca got a $1,000 investment to open what would become the antithesis of the burger joints and would change the landscape of fast food for years to come.

Fast forward to 2007 and the Jones’ is no longer King McWendy, instead it’s Mr. SUBWAY.  Just as we are being reminded that Americans are horribly overweight and unhealthy, SUBWAY introduced us to Jared; who lost 245 ponds eating SUBWAY and exercising.  Now comes the next generation of wannabe Jones’ with sub-shops popping up all over the place.  The same is true for contemporary wannabe Mega Churches.  This SUBWAY season of the Jones’ will last for a long time because of its healthy nature; however the real question is “Who or what will define the next generation of Jones’?”

Thoughts From Subway:

  • The Product- Fresh Submarine sandwiches
  • The Ad Campaign- Jared who lost 245 lbs. eating SUBWAY
  • The Results- 28,516 restaurants in 85 countries, Voted #1 Franchise

Are we spending so much time at work, church, and with our family trying to be like the Jones’ that we are missing the opportunity to define the next generation of Jones’?

BTW- The last name we need to be like is not Jones, it’s Christ!

I don’t know any “Jones” – and by the sounds of things, I don’t want to!!

JESUS IS BEYOND RELEVANT… I’m with Him!

Oh, this is good! I like this line: “no longer King McWendy” You’re funny!

I agree… let’s try something different! We don’t always have to look like the model! I think LC has done a great job of this… think outside the box… come up with something new, try something no one has ever thought of before… do the thing that “can’t be done.”

    Nice thoughts this morning!

Great challenges, Scott! I think Dirk and I knew we’d never be able to keep up with the Joneses. So, we didn’t even try. II Cor. 10:12 (NAS) has helped me so much with comparing. As I get older I find myself wanting to be challenged even more in my way of thinking. I don’t want to become stagnant in my ways. Thanks for challenging my thoughts with your words!

Inventive comparisons, but it always irks me to hear people use “Christ” as if it were Jesus’ last name, and not His Title.
    .
    such a complainer, I know.

(yeah, I know it wouldn’t have played as well in the mind without doing it that way) :-)

Chilly- Well Said, you always keep it short and direct!
Anna- Thanks for the comment. I agree that we should try to do things different; not for the sake of being different, but for growth.
Robin- I Like Challenges, being challenged and trying new things.
Greenup- That’s funny, I agree w/ you on the Jesus Christ comment. I actually thought about it; however it made for a good flow with the Jones’ comment.

People thought Ray Kroc was stupid when he put in a drive-thru.
One of my biggest pet peeves is someone saying, “If its not broken, don’t fix it.” If everyone felt that way we’d still be driving around in Fred Flintstone cars.
Eventually the current trends in church will be replaced by something new – but He will be the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Scott- Did you say Fred Flinstone? LOL
