Safe Toilet Syndrome

I know that this post sounds very random; well it is.  I think that it is definitely worth reading and it answers the question that many of us have asked ourselves.  BTW- This random thought was inspired while watching Oprah with my wife last night.  That is definitely not part of my daily regimen; it was one of those random moments.

Oprah had “Dr. Oz” on her show to answer a number of random questions.  The question that caught my attention was: “Is vacation constipation normal?  Does it hurt my body to hold in poop for so long?”  Dr. Oz’s response was that vacation, or traveling constipation was quite normal and is called “Safe Toilet Syndrome.”  I wonder how they came up w/ that name “Hmmmm Bob what do you think, I don’t know, well let’s call it STS or Safe Toilet Syndrome.”  LOL!  According to Dr. Oz and other research, here are the reasons for constipation when you are away from home:

  • A Change in diet, not enough fiber
  • Not drinking enough water
  • Long periods of sitting down
  • Change in circadian rhythms
  • Autonomic nervous system goes into safe mode, because of unfamiliar or “unsafe” environment

I always wondered what the deal was when I traveled or went on vacation.  I thought this might be helpful information with all the traveling for the Holiday Season.         “Happy Holidays!”

Have you ever suffered from “Safe Toilet Syndrome?”  That’s an awkward question, let’s try another one!  Was this post helpful or insightful?

Many of us have “Safe God Syndrome,” we love to play it safe!

Heh heh, Insightful is the lightbulb button. Uhm, you aliens aren’t allowed a “safe mode” in this world (grin).

I don’t deal with it, but my wife does. It’s like clockwork. AND, until now, we had no idea why it happens. Thanks.

BTW. My wife doesn’t read this blog, so I’m not going to die…hopefully.

    Hah…

I think this gives a new definiton to “poopy” theology!

I have heard some poopy theology before… but this was the first that seemed interesting!

Never experienced it. I can poop anywhere. Did I say that out loud?

Scott you crack me up! Your blog never fails to put a smile on my face. This is truly a random thought. But I must confess that I have experienced STS, and thanks to your post I now understand why!

How’s this for interesting; I may suffer from “Safe Communion Syndrome”. When travelling, I am reluctant to participate in communion with the what effectively is “the church universal”.
    .
There are a number of “reasons” for this; Some of them seemingly rational. The Lord’s Supper is not something to be trifled with; it is a Sacrament. (Dictionary . com : “Visible sign of inward grace”, “Something possessing sacred character”)
    .
Some churches don’t LET outsiders take communion, and not all are clear about what an “outsider” is. “Christian”, “My denomination”, “all denominations except X,Y,Z”. Beyond even that, what does it mean to these people when they take communion? By eating, could I be participating in a “pagan ritual” because their beliefs are so out of whack? In this case, I don’t worry about myself, for I have examined myself, but by drinking, do I implicitly approve of the ceremony, and condemn or confuse others?
    .
As a result, I seldom participate in communion while away, which is somewhat sad, because it could be a great opportunity for Joy.

Jimmy- I bet you are never in safe mode, or are you?
Scott- I hope your wife doesn’t read it, at least not today. LOL Thanks for the comment1
Cindy- Not only did you say it out loud, you said it for the world to see.
Princessjes- Notice in the about the site section, I have random rants. grin :-)
Clif- I love to learn…. LOL Thanks for the comment, it cracks me up as well.
Greenup- We have communion available evry experience for anyone who wishes to…

Scott, that’s because you only know me online. In RL, a survivor’s default mode is safe. I have to get to know you before I let the guard down. That happens online too, it’s just not as obvious. I can take more risks here. Speaking of which, do ya think you aimed a bit over their heads on this one? Y’all just take that whichever way you want. (grin)

I have serious “public restroom” issues, bordering on full-blown psychosis as a matter of fact, so let’s not even talk about “STS”

  • http://hamfighters.blogspot.com Patrick Sievert

I used to suffer from Chronic STS. Now, finally, I have been freed from this devastating disease. In fact, I just got home today from a week-long vacation where the only toilet was an outhouse, and I managed to stay on my regular pooping schedule.

    I’m healed!
