Lessons I Learned While In Prison 3 (of 4)

PERCEPTION IS NOT ALWAYS REALITY

Many times people will use the phrase “Perception is Reality” or “Perception becomes Reality” which is true in some cases; however “Perception Is Not Always Reality.”  One of the most common perceptions about prison is the old “Soap on a Rope” or “Big Bubba” is going to get you.  In other words, many people think that if you go to prison that you are going to get raped.

I am here to tell you that perception is not always reality.  There are definitely situations in prison where inmates are raped and even murdered; however that is the exception and not the rule.  The same economy of scale applies to outside of the prison walls; you can be raped and murdered in the “Free World.”  There are plenty of willing participants behind the walls, that inmates generally don’t have to force themselves. Here are a few more prison perceptions that are not always reality:

  • Murderers are always the “Mean & Scary guys” (Many times, not the case.)

  • If someone is behind bars they can’t continue to commit crimes (There are networks of criminal behavior behind the prison walls, just as there are in the free world.  You give an idle mind and Satan a bunch of free time… Watch Out!)

  • “They are just claiming God because they are in prison.”  (Many times we have to find ourselves like Jonah, before we get it… remember these guys are no different than many of us, they just happened to get caught.)

What are some perceptions that are not always reality that we face: I’m not good enough, I can’t do this because I’m a female, we will never get out of debt,  I’m to young, I will always be single, I couldn’t be a pastor, my business won’t be successful, you can’t shake that addiction, my marriage can’t be restored…..

PERCEPTION IS NOT ALAWYS REALITY!

What are some other perceptions that you have about prison?  What are some perceptions that you have overcome as not being reality?  Do you have any other thoughts on Perception & Reality?

This is a great post! I suppose the perception I’ve overcome is just believing what God says about me as truth, not my opinions, or other peoples thoughts… just God’s truth. It has made me the person I am today.

Great Thoughts. I struggle with thinking that God could possibly use someone as handicapped spiritually as I feel sometimes; but of course he’s used me thus far in the journey.

Interesting stuff. The only perception I have is I never want to go there.

I agree with Kevin on prison!

My earlier perception is that my life wouldn’t count for anything….I’m getting old enough that I’m seeing some fruit! That perception was a lie!! Yay!

    The only Reality is TRUTH!

I would like to think that “I’m a female” would be a perception that would also be a reality.

  • Scott Williams

    Anna- Thanks, you are right!
    JC- Amen
    Kevin- You and many others
Robin- TRUTH, great post on the zero BTW
Patrick- LOL, I am cracking up right now… You will be the second comment in the history of BigIsTheNewSmall to have me make a change to my post midstream! For those that will read this later I am changing it to say, I can’t do this because I am female. That’s some funny stuff!

That’s good Scott! When you said it yesterday I was a little nervous…I’m not as bold as you, but good…written with tact. See that’s why I can’t be as bold, I wouldn’t have as much tact.
Definitely overcoming a few things, daily.
One of the biggest perceptions vs reality I see is that :) doesn’t always = good.

It was hard to come to believing who I am in Christ, that I have position. For years I believed I was what I did, or doing something would make it a reality.

Now I want to learn how to love those that are still living in the fantasy of perception.

The phrase “Perception is reality” is false or Jesus was a blasphemer. A corollary is true: People REACT to perception, not reality.

Do prisoners wear striped clothes and drag a ball and chain around? Do they sing, “Nobody knows, the trouble I’ve seen”?

One perception I didn’t make a reality for a long time was that I was free from shame. I drug that ball and chain around for years. But, no longer, buddy, that prison is a thing of the past! Whoo-hoo! Can I get a shout out!?

This applies double time to both of our occupations. whatever the perception of the person that we are serving is is no doubt there reality. If we do not live up to their perception we have lost them. Sometimes that is just the way it is going to be. But I struggle with making their perception my reality on a daily basis.

So many… Just so many perceptions.

I laughed & sorta got uncomfortable reading this earlier because it hit me…we who are “free” feel bad for these prisoners when they a lot of times are the ones who are free. We are bound by our secret shame and guilt and many of them are free. Their sin isn’t hidden…it may have put them behind bars but they have been freed from its chains.

i recently read that if what you believe is not true then what you perceive is not reality…
