Do You Believe?

quickieNeed a Quickie?  Okay, here is a leadership quickshop: “Do You Believe?”

I believe the primary success of any team member, staff member, employee… can be attributed to the positive belief in those individuals from their leader.  I read a quote in one of Maxwell’s leadership books that reads something like: “A person will be as successful as the most important person in their life thinks they will be.”  In reference to leadership; a leaders belief and support are extremely important to the success of a team member.

Here are 5 Leadership Quick Steps:  The Yes You Can’s That Really Matter…

  • Truly believe in your team members; let them dream, lead, fail and don’t micro-manage.
  • Share your support and belief in your team members both publicly and privately.
  • Truly believe in your team members at a level that no one else will (If you don’t who will).
  • Be mindful that your team members know and feel their leaders level of belief in them (They can and will internalize the lid of your belief).
  • If you believe your team members can fly… even if they can’t, they will come darn close!
  • Bonus: Believe that you can learn from those that you lead!

Do you believe in somebody, does somebody believe in you?  Thoughts on “Do You Believe?

“A person will be as successful as the most important person in their life thinks they will be.”

WOW! Thanks for sharing that paraquote, Scott.

    Blessings

Good stuff sir. I think you have to believe in your team members. One of the challenges I’ve seen is when you know a team member has “capped” out or hit their “leadership ceiling” to use Maxwell speak. My practice is to give them things they can hit a home run with and praise them publicly. What do you do in that situation?

I thought of your post tonight at Switch and wondered how many students lives would be changed and uplifted if we replaced team members with child? The principles here are so universal. Thanks for the great post.

Scott, I’m feeling better about myself as an employee just reading this list!

Scott, great post. I can attest that these principles work. As someone who was very introverted, but timidly decided to step out and lead a lifegroup, David Brown at the Edmond campus was VERY instrumental in developing my leadership. Thanks to him believing in me, and giving me more responsiblity than I EVER thought I was capable of handling and more than I thought I had earned, I have led 2 lifegroups and am leading a monthly micromission, and even preaching at the homeless shelter! God did a huge work in me, but the catalyst was DEFINITELY the face that DB saw potential, and made it clear to me that he TRULY believed in me – it meant the world.

Scott, it’s evident why you are such a great CP!!! Thank you for sharing this as the 5+1 principles here are all 100% true. Conversely, the opposite is also 100% true! We’ve been on both ends of the spectrum, and I can confidently say I would much prefer to be on this end of it with someone who believes in me even when it is hard at times to believe in myself. When someone in leadership over you doubts your potential or flat out doesn’t believe in you, it can have a huge impact on your job performance, self esteem, and overall success in life. Sadly, few leaders realize the effect of having this type of belief (or lack of).
