The Definition Of A Poor Leader!

leader definitionIt’s always fun to read leadership quotes and hear the varying opinions on the definition of a great leader.  It’s one of those concepts, in which everyone seems to have an opinion about.  Instead of defining what a great leader, we are going to define a Poor Leader.  If you go to Webster and see how they define these two words separately, here is what you get:

  • Leader- A Person or thing that leads
  • Poor- Deficient or lacking in something specified, lacking in skill, ability, or training, deficient in desirable ingredients, qualities

If you combine the two you get something like: Poor Leader- A person in a leadership role that lacks the necessary skill, ability, and overall qualties to effectively lead.  Although that is a “definition of a poor leader” it doesn’t necessarilly communicate my definition or your definition of a poor leader.

If I were to ask you to give me a definition of a poor leader, we could come up with some amazing quotes, thoughts and definitions.  Instead of asking for a definition, I am wanting you the BigIsTheNewSmall thinkers to define a poor leader in one word.  We did this same exercises with Great Leader, not long ago.  Just like there is power in a quote, there is power in one word.  These words will be unique to you, how you think, who you are, what you’ve experienced…

The Rules: Define a “Poor Leader” in one word.  (You can use the same word that someone else used)  You can’t use your boss or anyone else’s name!

I’ll go fist…  Everyone please join in and who knows, you may see these words pop up in another post or somewhere else at a later date.

There’s a place for eveyone in the body of Christ and just because someone may possess some less than the best characteristics they still play a part. The last time I checked, Jesus Christ was still the only perfect one. Leadership is comprised of imperfect people. 1 Corinthians 12:22-25 says “Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary; And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour, and our uncomely partshave more abundant comeliness. For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked. That there should be no schism in the body: but the members should have the same care one for another. I believe that leadership is a calling but that person grows as he leads and makes mistakes as he leads as well. I don’t think a person wakes up one day and says I have everything it takes to be a perfect leader. We learn as we grow.

Thanks for all of the comments!

Debra- There is a place for everyone; however in my opinion that place is not leadership for everyone. There may not be any perfect leaders… but let me tell you there are some poor leaders and they possess many of the charactersitics listed in these comments!

I completely understand your point Scott and I’ve met some leaders who shouldn’t have been in that position. My question becomes then how can I help them to be what God has called them to be? I think that we all have long suits and when we discover what they are, we should do our best to serve in that area. Also, I see lots of times people picking apart one another, when they should be praying for one another. I don’t go out of my way to look for the qualities in people that make them less than God’s best. I also agree that there are people in leadership that shouldn’t be in that position. But I also beleive that the God who daily redeemeth my life from destruction, knows this and has things under control. All sin is missing the mark and sometimes people do need to be called on the carpet over these things. Like God’s wonderful matchless word, there is a way to handle things decently and in order.

I’d like to say also, that I hope I haven’t offended you in any way. I enjoy your site immensely and love God with all my heart, soul, mind and strength. I diligently search the scriptures because I want to know his will for my life. I think you have a lovely family and I pray that God gives you all the wisdom you need to lead his people. Because I can tell it’s a real heart thing with you, as it should be. I’m not here to challenge you. Just to share your excitement about all God has available for us.

A good leader also knows he needs to surround himself with good people to whom he can share his vision, so that they too can take the reins and bring the carriages to the same detination.

Forgive me for breaking the rule here, but a bad leader may also be one who stoops to making long lists that make others feel bad – this is just another add-on to that list of course – OR a bad leader is he that feels threatened by a list like this – (i.e. like I am tempted to right now) – damn, why don’t you rather find something positive in the person(s) that destroyed your life?

Is there really among us religous men and women such a thing as total power? In that case, there is also total corruption in a man. Alternatively, there are, among Christians, also those who think independently.

This means that if you are not able find *one* positive thing about your bad ass former boss, you just appointed him a candidate Anti-Christ or something. So get real.

“Demanding immediate obedience without any prayerful considerance whatsoever” does not necessarily mean “Of The Devil.”

You may rather interpret such obvious immaturity as “being of an old body but a young mind” which is not another word for “dead” but rather “a possibly great success given enough time, prayer, encouragement and correction.”

You’re not dead till you’re dead.
