Free Your Mind!

free your mindSometimes you have to clear your mind, in order to Free Your Mind for more stuff.  You can do that by meditating, praying, vacationing, writing or just changing your normal routine.  Today I’m changing my normal routine and I’m not going to do any writing this morning, at-least not any writing that requires me to think.

I’m trying to free my mind so I can absorb all of the new information that I’m going to receive from our Family reunion, which begins this morning and lasts through Friday.  There are a wide range of speakers including Tim Elmore, Craig Groeschel and one of my personal favorites Andy Stanley.

Say Nothing, Do Nothing & Be Nothing!

criticismCriticism is a one of those words that seems to cut most people like a knife.  Although the knife doesn’t seem as sharp when we put the word “constructive” in front of the word criticism; none-the-less the word still seems to pierce.

When I was growing up my mom would always tell me: “Son, you can’t control or worry about what people say… you can only control what you say and what you do.”  Later on in life, as a young leader I had a mentor that would always say “If you’re doing something worthy of people taking shots at you… they will.  I would much rather have a leader that people don’t always understand and who are occasionally criticized, than a “leader” that no one ever talks about.”   I have heard my pastor say something like “If you want to find the leader, look for the one with the arrow in their back!”

I tend to view criticism as neutral… “It Is What It Is!”  I prefer to “Eat The Meat and Spit Out The Bones!”  If you don’t want to be criticized, I have some advice for you: Say Nothing, Do Nothing & Be Nothing!

I don’t ever want to find my place with those “Cold and Timid Souls.”

10 Ways Leaders Try Too Hard!

chill pillThis is one of those posts where the title says everything.  This title brings vivid imagery of situations, lists and leaders who simply try too hard.  Below, I have listed 10 quick examples of ways that leaders try too hard:

  1. Always have a need to let everyone know they are the leader.
  2. Everything is treated as a crisis and a big deal.
  3. Simple things are made to be complex.
  4. Meetings are held so they can talk and feel important.
  5. They are more worried about their supervisor’s approval than the approval of their followers.
  6. They find their worth in doing stuff. (I need to be doing something)
  7. Because of their own insecurity, they always try to find fault in others.
  8. They over-systematize everything to try and reach a desired result.
  9. Try so hard to make things happen, instead of letting things happen.
  10. They think all success is defined by a 1,2,3… process.
  11. Bonus: They try to copycat, duplicate or imitate other leaders.

This is one of those lists that could go on and on like the Energizer Bunny…   In my opinion a leader will never reach their full potential by Trying Too Hard!  When an effective leader is in the middle of their success or has finished with their work; everyone involved will simply say it happened naturally.

Take a Chill Pill… Stop Trying So Hard!

5 Most Irritating Things About Twitter

5 thingsIf you follow me on Twitter or read this little blog then you probably know by now that I am a big fan of Twitter.  I have shared Twitter posts about Why You Should Twitter In Church, Why Pastors Should Twitter, The Science Of Leveraging Twitter For Your Blog and countless others.

Although I’m a big fan of Twitter there are also a number of things about Twitter that irritate me and probably irritate everyone reading this post that actively participates in the Twitter community.  Here is a list of the 5 Most Irritating Things about Twitter:

  1. Pornographic, Sleazy, Inappropriate Profile Pics and Tweets–  This is one of the most irritating things in all of Twitter, seriously no one wants to see your soft porn profile pics. and the vulgar XXX stuff is just ridiculous.
  2. Stupid, Spammy Direct Messages- There is nothing more irritating than to look in your direct message inbox and see a message with someone encouraging you to join their mafia, tell you how to get more followers than Ashton Kutcher in 30 days, how to get rich on Twitter, something about a goofy gift and anything with the words affiliate and marketing in it.
  3. Trending Topic Foolishness–  Twitter trending topics are a great way to find out not only what’s popular in the Twitter Community, but what’s trending around the globe.  The problem is that the spammers and pornography folks have made this their home.  They have become great at weaving their negative message in with the trending topics.  Another foolish aspect of the trending topics is when someone will basically make a tweet with all of the trending topics in one.  According to the trending topics right now, it would be something like: Good Morning TGIF cuz I can do Follow Friday & Jay-Z was seen in Iran doing some Paranormal Activity and caught H1N1. Grey’s Anatomy G20. That’s just foolish and irritating!
  4. Negative Nancy–  It could actually be Negative Nancy or Negative Norman if you get my drift.  Negative people are not only irritating face-to-face and in the “Real World” they are just as irritating in the TwitterWorld.  Please save the always complaining and negative drama for your mama!
  5. Over-Inflated Bios.–  Spare us the fact that you are a billionaire, guru, expert, coach!  Yea Right!

6 Life Lessons From A 6 Year Old

jaydenOften times I will gain tremendous insight and life lessons from my two sons.  I thought I would tap into the innocent mind of my 6 year old son Jayden and ask him 6 random questions.  The answers will be exactly how Jayden answers them, so here we go, 6 Life Lessons From A 6 Year Old:

  1. What is Leader?  A leader is someone that doesn’t steal and people follow!
  2. What do you like most about school?  My teacher is nice!
  3. What is sin? Being bad and not doing what you are supposed to do.
  4. What do you like about church? I get to worship God.
  5. Who is Jesus?  The leader of your life!
  6. If there was one thing you could change in the world, what would it be? I would uhh… change uhh… “I would Change The World!”

The More I Listen To God…

listenThe More I Listen To God... the less I listen to people.  The More I Listen To God, the more able I am to discern the intentions of people.  The more I tune into God’s frequency, the easier it is to tune out the ambient noise of the lesser frequencies.  The More I Listen To God, the more able I am to find “God Moments” in all aspects of life.

The More I Listen To God, the closer I draw to God.  The closer I draw to God, the closer He draws to me. James 4:8

God is always talking, I’m just becoming better at listening.

The Best Church Experience Ever

holy spiritI am sitting at Starbucks outside of The Crescent Hotel in Downtown Dallas, as I type this post.  My wife and I were down here this weekend, because I had the opportunity to preach at Concord Church.  Let me tell you, my experience at Concord Church was one of The Best Church Experiences Ever… The Spirit of God moved, the environment was ripe and lives were changed.

On the other side of the Red River at the Northwest Oklahoma City Campus of (n-dub); all I have heard is that it was The Best Church Experience Ever. Here are a few of the text messages that I received from different people about what happened at the n-dub this weekend:

  • u missed an amazing weekend at the n-dub! 55 salvations at the 11:30 alone!!!
  • It was crazy good this weekend. The Spirit was moving
  • Best Experience since I’ve started attending lifechurch
  • That was the best service ever, worship, rappers, message, God… I couldn’t stop crying
  • We missed u in worship 2day! It was such an awesome experience! No 1 wanted 2 leave! The Lord is good!
  • Three words: Off The Hook! In the top 5 services from the last 10 years.

The bottom line is that what happened this weekend at Concord, the n-dub and churches around the globe is The Spirit of God moved in environments that were ripe.  I just talked to a good friend of mine who actually sent me the text message stating: “Three words: Off The Hook! In the top 5 services from the last 10 years.”  I think he said it best, when he said “It wasn’t the rappers, it wasn’t worship, it wasn’t the fact that Craig had everyone stand during the invitation…  it wasn’t a system or a thing but rather a combination of things in an environment where people wanted to experience God and The Spirit moved.”

I wasn’t at the n-dub, but I didn’t need to be to understand what happened.  I wasn’t at your church that experienced something very similar this weekend, but I didn’t need to be to understand what happened.  The Spirit Of God Moved!

A weak phrase that Christians will often use is: (Fill in the blank)… “Then God Showed Up!”  Seriously as though God is not Omnipresent.  God didn’t just show up, He was already there.  When you experience The Best Church Experience Ever, don’t think that God just showed up, He was already there.  The Spirit Of God really moves when the environment is ripe, the hearts of the people are ready and God is not put in a box.

Do you want The Best Church Experience Ever?  Create an environment where people are free to worship, God is not put in a box, people are welcome… and let The Spirit Of God Move.

7 Ways Twitter Can Make You A Better Leader In 140 Or Less

  1. I Want Access– You have access to the thoughts, lives, principles & activities of some of the best leaders and leadership authors in the world.
  2. Let’s Be Open– Allowing those that U work for, w/ or may potentially work with in the future to take a more open look at your life. The Other Side Of You!
  3. Think Before You Act– Forces U 2 think before U tweet realizing that everything U tweet is permanent; all leadership decision R permanent at least 4 that moment.
  4. Keep It Pithy– U have 2 get straight 2 the point, 140 or less. Streamline yr thoughts, say what’s necessary, make it meaningful & Realize yr words matter!
  5. What’s The 411– There is an abundance of relevant information at your fingertips, current events, tech., trends, culture, scripture, product, research…
  6. You’re Not My Boss–  You have to learn how to lead and connect in an environment where people are not forced to follow or connect… Why should I listen to you?
  7. Don’t Be A Phony- Authenticity is critical for a leader! People smell a phony a mile away. Be Real, Be yourself. “Do You, It’s a Statement… Not a Question!”
