Don’t Be A Weak Leader!

Leadership is about confidence, not to be confused with cockiness.  If you show me an effective leader, I can guarantee you that you are showing me a confident person.  Confidence is not always about the “rah rah, let’s go get em,” but rather the subtle characteristic at the core of great leaders.

On the contrary, the Weak leader is at the other end of the spectrum from the confident, effective, good, or even great leader.

Let’s start off with the definition of weak according to Webster.

Weak- Not strong, liable to yield or break under pressure or strain. Deficient in mental power or judgement.  Not having moral strength, firmness, force or resolution of character.

Don’t Be A Weak Leader…  because the WEAK Leader is always:

  • Worried about what the right people think, instead of worried about doing what’s right.
  • Easily influenced and changes their mind at the drop of a hat.
  • Assumes others can’t do their job, so they become a micro-manager.
  • Kills the security and potential in others because of their insecurity.  They make excuses instead of developing others to create results.

Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. ~RW Emerson

Be strong, Be confident… Don’t Be A WEAK Leader!

I don’t believe I am a weak leader (to answer your specific question). Working with “leaders” who are weak is draining and frustrating. It brings good initiatives to a hault and shuts down broader involvement. The “W” should be “Wobbly in standing up, instead of having a backbone when things get a little challenging.” Great post!

What if you are a week leader? How do you pull yourself out of the confince pit?

Thanks for the great reminder. I have been a weak leader in the past – thankfully Jesus’ saving grace helped me clear out a lot of the trash in my life to get me beyond all that. Be careful as a leader – weak or strong, your legacy will always be there. I found out the hard way when I received some hatemail on FB from a former employee from my pre-saved days. Ouch!

Love the acronym, not just because no one can accuse me of being weak. ;)

I’d suggest people who fall into that acronym likely have the pastoral gift. They don’t need to be worried, easily influenced, assuming others don’t know their jobs or killing others because of their insecurity – but those who naturally think like pastors, who will only go as fast as the slowest sheep, who have a desire to see everyone get along, and who think in terms of relationship can easily live out of their insecurity in the ways you mentioned, if they haven’t matured into fathers and mothers of the faith.

Love your blog. Just subscribed to your rss feed. I’ll be back often.
