10 Signs They Are Not A Good Leader

Most of us have worked for leaders that are for all intents and purposes are not very good.  I actually learned a lot in my early days of leadership from some really bad leaders.  Not only were they bad leaders, they were oblivious to the negative affects of their poor leadership.   There are many signs that a leader is not a good leader and I have identified 10 Signs below.

The reason I attribute these signs to not being a ”Good Leader” is because a leader has to at least reach the mantle of being a “Good Leader” before they can be a ”Great Leader”  Here are 10 Signs They Are Not A Good Leader… Remember ”They”could be you!

  • 1. they are not willing to fail.
  • 2. they only talk and never listen.
  • 3. they don’t develop and produce other leaders.
  • 4. they micro-manage; that’s management not leadership.
  • 5. they are insecure or threatened by someone that they lead.
  • 6. they are not willing to follow and learn from those that they lead.
  • 7. they are focused on pleasing people and what people think.  Consumed with whether or not they look good to their superiors.
  • 8. they don’t genuinely care about the people they lead and have difficulty getting people to follow.
  • 9. they are willing to make the wrong decision, because of the fear of  fall-out from making the right decision.
  • 10. they only dream about being like so and so, instead of being the best they can be.

They either ”don’t do” or “are not working towards” the 5 Things Next-Level Leaders Alaways Do!

Share your thoughts on any of these “10 Signs” and add to the list!

#1 It’s funny that number one is not being willing to fail. I’m not a leader, but my husband and I discussed this on yesterday after bible study. He told me that the gift that God gave me doesn’t require that I pursue additional education. Gift? I thought that God passed me up whenever he was handing out gifts. My husband basically told me that I needed to stop hiding my gift and put it to use. It just may be that I’m not using my gift because I’m afraid to fail. I’m my biggest critic.

#5 This is a creepy one. A leader shouldn’t hire someone for the great qualities that they possess and then hold them back because they feel threatened by them in some way. They must allow the individual to work their magic. If that means that all of the attention(spotlight)shifts to their team member then so be it. It shouldn’t be about who’s getting the recognition. It’s about working together to achieve a common goal.

#7 Good leaders love people and please God. Somebody, somewhere will criticize a leader’s efforts. At the end of the day,a leader must ask- Is what I’m doing pleasing to God? Love people because it is almost impossible to please them.

#10 Be yourself. There is nothing worse than watching someone try to be a duplicate of another person. If the person could be a fly on their wall for a day,he/she might change their mind about wanting to be like him/her. Everything that glitters isn’t gold. The only stars are in the sky. Be You!

    Hey Bro,
The saddest thing about “not good leaders” is that they don’t allow any space in their life for people who can help them see those 10 Signs in their leadership. “Ungood leaders” mistake constructive feedback about their 10 Signs for personal criticism. They are dead in the water, their team members are drowning, and their organization is slowly sinking…and they don’t even know it.

    Good Word, My Friend,

Having been around a leader like this before, I have prayed my face off that if I ever exhibited any of these, I’d hear clearly and humble myself before the Lord and everyone around me.

This kind of behavior wrecks ministry.

Praying is one of the best solutions for the leader with these issues and those under the leadership.

    Definitely an eye-opener.

Good. A nice follow up to this would be what makes a Good leader. Though we can just infer the opposite of this list perhaps there is more to be added in the positive?

I have done several, I will knock out another one soon.

The Gartner report about Windows phone 7 series getting bigger than iOS seems very interesting. Hopefully it won’t come to that but. Thumbs up!

I would think that not teaching / preaching truth or participating in sin would be on a “bad leader” list? Why only secular items, any reason?
