Walking or Standing?

I have been traveling quite a bit lately and I’m always amazed at the life and leadership lessons that I pick up while traveling.  The lessons come from observations, people watching, experiences and the list goes on and on.

The last time I was traveling I stepped on to one of those moving sidewalks (as seen in the picture that I took above).  This moving sidewalk has many names: travelator, horizontal escalator, walkalator, autowalk, movator or moving sidewalk.  Personally I like “Walkalator.”  I think it’s because the name took me back to my old school days with Warren G & “Regulator.”

I noticed there are two types of people that get on the “Walkalator,” those who stand and those who walk.  Whether you walk or stand the “Walkalator” is moving.  I prefer to get on the “Walkalator” and continue walking like I’m on a treadmill.

That’s the story of life:  The world is moving, changing and growing.  We have a choice, we can either stand or walk.  I choose to walk, I choose to move, I choose to grow, I choose to change.

Walk!

“For time and the world do not stand still. Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or the present are certain to miss the future.” John Fitzgerald Kennedy

I really enjoyed this. Thanks Scott. If you are just standing around life is going to pass you by!

With the World constantly in motion, if you choose to stand still__ as IT moves forward your ideally heading backwards …right?
Choose keep moving forward. Love it.

Every time I travel I remember how much of a hurry everyone is in.

I was in Denver airport not long ago and had built in time between flights so I wouldn’t be rushed getting to my terminal and was hit square in the face (figuratively) at how every single person bustling around me was in a hurry to get where they were going…some, I am sure, even in a hurry to get to their terminal to sit and wait for their plane.

So, I stood on the moving sidewalk (on the right-hand side) and purposefully didn’t walk…just to enjoy not doing anything but watching the people around me for all of 2 minutes…it was great! That’s the least I have done in a 2 minute span since…well, it’s been awhile.

    Thanks,

      BINGO – great point.

I had the same experience as you recently while traveling alone and with my husband. There is a time to walk and a time to stand still.

The KEY is know when to walk or when to stand.

Love the post, love the comment.

      Be well

Good thoughts here. And reading the comments makes me now wanna go and listen to 90′s hip-hop! Perhaps “They Reminisce Over You” by Pete Rock & CL Smoothe or “My Posse’s On Broadway” by Sir Mix-a-Lot! ;D

Even if you choose to stand still on those moving side walks you are being moved ahead. So you’ve got to move forward whether you want to or not. Try finding a rotary phone…Want to buy a 8-track tape…How about a new VCR. The danger of standing still in a world that is constantly moving is you may get ran over in the process…
