The Freedom To Be Authentic

The longer I live and the more people I meet, talk to, work with, counsel, mentor and simply listen to; the more I realize people struggle and fight for authenticity. People have a deep desire to be “who they truly are” but find themselves caught up like a hamster trapped in the wheel of mimicry.

No matter the person or the level of success they have achieved, the overarching reason they feel trapped and unable to be authentic is due to fear. Fear of what people think. Fear of being chastised. Fear of being wrong. Fear of making a mistake. Fear that the authentic individual deep down inside of them might be a little more daring, caring and sharing.

The crazy thing is that God didn’t give you the spirit of fear; however He did give you an authentic spirit, an authentic you. Drop the fear, let go of the fake and pick up the authentic. Authenticity will bring about challenges, critics and mistakes… Be authentic anyway.

“The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.” – C. Jung

You were brought into this world as an original, please don’t leave it as a phony. You are now free to move about the cabin of life… You Have The Freedom To Be Authentic.

Why do you think it is so difficult for people to be authentic?

  • Kelly Thrall-Jones

I think one of the biggest challenges is that people look for similarities in other people in order to relate and feel connected instead of finding the value in differences. This in turn can cause people to feel or be rejected because they are different or considered to be against the grain. There tends to be a value placed more on similarities rather than differences. I like to be around people similar to me to relate better sometimes but I learn best from the people who are nothing like me. And the few authentic people I have found are the people I aspire to learn the most from because in it I find true freedom and amazing courage.

Thx Lance… How are you my friend

  • You were brought into this world as an original, please don’t leave it as a phony” BRILLIANT. This is spot on Scott. I think the trouble is that people search for authenticity in the wrong places. They look to all the external sources in life to define them. This is why a relationship with Jesus is so essential to becoming who you’re meant to be. No longer do you feel the need to look to the World to define you. You are define by who lives in you. Good stuff, Scott.

“We are defined by who lives in us” Well said…  God thinks you’re a winner, he knows that you are more than a conqueror…  He believes in you so believe in yourself and stop worrying about others.

Insecurity is a form of pride. I believe it’s definitely fear based. The fear of losing something that we have or not getting something that we want. For me, I have to constantly turn it over to God. Every morning, before my feet hit the floor and every evening before lying down in my bed.
