Amazing Life Lesson From Derek Fisher Going To The Oklahoma City Thunder

The 5 Championship Ring NBA Veteran Point Guard Derek Fisher was traded to the Houston Rockets and worked a buyout and chose to play with the Oklahoma City Thunder.  As a Thunder fan that really excites me for the future and champion aspirations. Then Thunder will now have both Harden & Fisher who can both do some damage off of the bench.

Fisher chose to wear number 37, because as he simply states, “that’s my age.” The 16 year NBA veteran and President of the NBA Players Union has lots of life experience, knowledge and wisdom that is represented by that #37 Thunder Jersey that he now proudly wears.

Fisher’s classy persona fits well with the classy bunch of Oklahoma City Thunder players and the best fans in the NBA. In life we have lots of situations and experiences where we can learn some major life lessons if we are willing to open our eyes. I think there is major life lesson for everyone from Derek Fisher’s trade and acquisition.  Read through the life lesson in this statement that Fisher made yesterday:

“Like I stated earlier, I’m going to do my best right now to refrain from focusing too much, if at all, on what has transpired, what was said, what could have happened, what should have happened,” Fisher said. “I’m more focused on the positives of why I’m here. I’ll be able to address those things in due time…. Right now it’s about the Thunder and Oklahoma City.” ~Derek Fisher

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 1 Peter 5:6

Stop focusing on what has transpired but rather what God has for you.

Check out this video below of Fisher’s 1st appearance in a Thunder Uniform (Standing Ovation)

This May Be The Best Blogpost You Will Ever Write

Today I don’t really feel like writing a blogpost…  I don’t even feel like finding a randomly cool YouTube video to share.

That’s all that I have.

Have a nice day!

I Got Your Back!

Just because someone says, “I Got Your Back” or “I Believe In You,” doesn’t necessarily mean that they really do.  Well maybe they do, however their version of having your back may look something like the image to the left.

Sometimes you have to embrace the State Of Missouri’s slogan of being the “Show-Me State.”  If someone says they believe in you and have your back…  make sure their actions match up with their words, otherwise you might end up like the person to the left.

I Got Your Back!

Failing To Admit That You’re Wrong

Failing to admit you’re wrong doesn’t make you right.  It doesn’t make the mistake go away and it doesn’t mean people will assume that you had good intentions.

The willingness to admit that you’re wrong is a huge key to success for any leader, business, parent, organization, marriage etc.  Unfortunately, folks expend gargantuan amounts of energy avoiding the admittance of the fact that they were wrong, trying cover up their wrongs and hoping their wrongs will somehow make a right.  One, two or three wrongs don’t make a right; however the admittance of a wrong is definitely a gigantic step in the right direction.

Failing To Admit That You’re Wrong is just wrong.

Why You’re Held Hostage To Envy

Hostage – Envy from Nick Jones on Vimeo.

Currently, I’m working on a project that deals with the correctional system. This takes me back to my old days as a Prison Warden and reminded of this video that I shot in one of the facilities that I previously operated.

Are you held hostage to envy?

Echo Conference – Geeks, Artists & Storytellers

The Other Side Of Resistance

If you want to be successful, you must learn to create resistance. Not only do you need to learn to create resistance, but you must develop thick enough skin to weather the storms of resistance.

If you want to make things happen, you must create resistance somewhere along the way. Tomorrow’s successes are planted in today’s soil of resisting, opposing, and withstanding.

If you are not experiencing resistance, chances are you’re playing it too safe.

Some of the greatest success stories are stories of individuals and organizations that embraced and created resistance.  Push through resistance with persistence.

“The path of least resistance is the path of the loser.” ~H.G. Wells

Whether it’s sin, life, leadership, sports or business: Winners and success stories are on the other side of resistance.

11 Signs You May Suffer From Ministry Arrogance

As a ministry consultant and Chief Solutions Officer for Nxt Level Solutions, I get the opportunity to work with lots of different ministries and ministry leaders from around the country.  It’s awesome to see how God is using each ministry’s unique approach, style and idiosyncrasies to share the gospel, transform communities and change lives.  After leaving a visit with a church, the one thing that I always walk away with is this: “God is doing some amazing things everywhere and in ministries of all shapes, styles, sizes, denominations…”

On the other hand, I’ve come to the realization that it’s easy for ministries, groups, emerging movements and denominations to become what I call “ministry arrogance.”

Arrogance is defines as: display of superiority or self-importance; overbearing pride.  Combine that with ministry and you have – ministries and ministry leaders who show a display of superiority or self-importance; overbearing pride.

Yes your ministry is doing great.  Yes God is allowing your church to grow. Yes there are awesome core distinctions of your denomination. Yes people want to learn from you. Yes you are the sexy trendy thing. Yes you hold onto important traditions… No your ministry is not superior than any of the other ministries that God is using to draw people closer to Himself.

11 Signs You May Suffer From Ministry Arrogance

  • 1. You spend more time focusing on how others “have it wrong” than you do on the things that you can improve on.
  • 2. You laugh and shake your head at the stylistic differences of another ministry.
  • 3. You think your worship style is the only way someone could possibly connect with God.
  • 4. You can’t understand why so-and-so’s church is growing and their pastor is not even a good preacher.
  • 5. You can’t believe that ministries would have the audacity to have that length of a service time  (too long or too short).
  • 6. You believe the issues that you care about are the only issues that everyone else should care about.
  • 7. You discount New Media and Online Ministry as illegitimate ministry.
  • 8. You allow your way and your preference to become “The Only Way!”
  • 9. You think because the expert at the conference said it… It must be the way, the truth and the life.
  • 10. You can’t believe that a ministry would use that version of the Bible seriously NIV is the Non-Inspired-Version.
  • 11. You read this list and laugh it off and say, “Who does that?”
  • Bonus: When it comes to ministry you think BigIsTheNewSmall  Wait scratch that, uhh that’s the name of my blog, somehow that has to be true. :)

The bottom line is there are many more ways and signs that you may suffer from ministry arrogance.  We are all susceptible to it and often times the only way that we can get away from it is by having an open heart, getting out and being exposed other ministries and truly trusting God.

I’m speaking to you out of deep gratitude for all that God has given me, and especially as I have responsibilities in relation to you. Living then, as every one of you does, in pure grace, it’s important that you not misinterpret yourselves as people who are bringing this goodness to God. No, God brings it all to you. The only accurate way to understand ourselves is by what God is and by what he does for us, not by what we are and what we do for him.

In this way we are like the various parts of a human body. Each part gets its meaning from the body as a whole, not the other way around. The body we’re talking about is Christ’s body of chosen people. Each of us finds our meaning and function as a part of his body. But as a chopped-off finger or cut-off toe we wouldn’t amount to much, would we? So since we find ourselves fashioned into all these excellently formed and marvelously functioning parts in Christ’s body,

Let’s just go ahead and be what we were made to be, without enviously or pridefully comparing ourselves with each other, or trying to be something we aren’t. If you preach, just preach God’s Message, nothing else. Romans 12:3-6 MSG (aka the hip hop slang version of the Bible)

The Life Of The #Thunderup Hashtag

My man @Rt44man sent me an infographic of The Life of The #Thunderup Hashtag.  He had created it over @visually.  @Visually is a really creative site that allows you to create some really cool things.  I had some glitchy problems creating some of the Life of A Hashtag; however I’m sure it’s just some bugs that @visually are working out.

The Life Of The #Thunderup Hashtag

The cool thing about the #Thunderup hashtag is that your boy (me) is one of the top influencers along with the bearded one @JHarden13.  Enjoy the history and life of the hashtag of the 2012 NBA Champions Oklahoma City Thunder. #Thunderup

60 Minutes Special – Khan Academy

I watched this 60 Minutes Story about the Khan Academy and it is absolutely inspiring.  It is a vivid illustration of how ideas can flourish into something bigger than you can ask for, think about or imagine.  The key is dreaming BIG. and thinking BIGGER.

The Khan Academy is going to revolutionize education.  Watch this video, it’s definitely worth your time.  After watching this video on Khan Academy and #Kony2012 in the same week and you are not inspired… you are uninspirable.
