How The Mighty Fall

Here is a quick thought video that I shot and originally I was outside, and that’s why I referenced it being windy.  Share your thoughts about why some mighty pastors, businesses, leaders, influencers, sports teams… fall and why some mighty leaders, influencers and Chick-fil-A’s of the world seem to stay on top.

BigIsTheNewSmall~ Think big… Think SMALL

In My Bag, On My List & On My Mind!

Here are some books I’m reading; some books I’m planning on reading and a bit of what’s on my mind:

  • Tribes: Seth Godin (In My Bag: Almost finished reading, this book is money go get it today)
  • Jesus Wants To Save Christians: Rob Bell & Don Golden (In My Bag: Just Put this one in my bag, I will definitely be blogging about it… I will take longer to read this one)
  • The Starfish and The Spider: Ori Brafman & Rod Beckstrom (In My Bag: This type stuff intrigues me)
  • The Reason For God: Timothy Keller (On My List: Recommended by a buddy)
  • The Shack: William Young (On My List: I had been avoiding this book, because I don’t generally read this type of book and everyone is reading it.  Two weeks ago a member came to my campus and told me that God sent him there to give me a copy of The Shack.  Hmmm I think I will start really soon!
  • Churning: My Mind (On My Mind: Sometimes you just have to let things churn.)
  • Settling: My Mind (On My Mind: Don’t settle for others opinions, expectations, perceptions…  Don’t be naive & don’t settle!)

What’s In your Bag, On Your List & On Your Mind?

Heretics Are The Keys To Success

tribes.jpgMy team has went through a book discussion for almost every Seth Godin book that he has written.  I am obviously what Seth Godin calls a true fan; hence the blog title BigIsTheNewSmall, a spin-off of his “Small Is The New Big.”  Some of the ladies on my team have not always been fans of every one of Seth’s books; however everyone is really diggin’ his new book “Tribes.”  I’m going to share some thoughts as I finish Tribes this week; If you don’t have it, Go get it now.  Here are my Tribes quotes/thoughts for the day:

“It’s clearly more fun to make the rules than follow them, and for the first time, it’s also profitable, powerful, and productive to do just that.  Suddenly, heretics, troublemakers, and change agents aren’t merely thorns in our side–they are the keys to our success.” Seth Godin  I always encourage my team to make some new rules and consistenly ask the question: “What can we break?”

“Leaders, on the other hand, don’t care very much for organizational structure or the official blessing of whatever factory they work for.  Leaders must become aware of how the organization works because this allows them to change it.” Seth Godin   I’m a strong believer that you can “not care about the organizational structure” and still be respectful of the organization.  Quit worrying about getting the organizational blessing; Go Lead!  Transcend The Isms…

  • Are you, do you know or have you known a heretic that is/was a key to success?
  • Thoughts on the heretic & leaders not caring much for organizational structure/organizational blessing.

BTW- Seth you can stop by and leave a comment as well! {Fist Bump}

I Need Your Help!

For quite some time I have been thinking about putting these random thoughts that go through my head into a readable form, we like to call a book.  I am writing this book because: I said I was, It’s a personal goal, I have something to say, I have some stories to share, I have some unique experiences…  The book will be some of what you read here at BigIsTheNewSmall with more life, more journey, more leadership thoughts, more stories, more musings etc. (Prison, Politics & Pulpit)

Who knows how far I am from having it completely written; however I have landed on a title for now, which is ”Transcend The Isms’.”  If you want to read my original post “Transcend The Isms’“ click here.    I have been thinking through and others have recommended some random sub-titles… some are good, some are bad and some are ugly.   Read through the sub-titles below and let me know if any work for you.  Please make your own recommendations as well (I’m not creative, You are!).  Here we go:

  • What the Heck Is An Ism’?
  • Crushing The Freakin’ Box
  • A Different Kind Of Leader
  • I Don’t Want To Be Like Mike
  • Don’t Drink The Kool Aid
  • Settling For Second Sucks
  • I Don’t Want To Be Like You
  • Mediocrity Sucks
  • Don’t Be The Company Guy
  • It’s Time For An Upgrade
  • Don’t Read This Book
  • Living Leading To A Slightly Different Beat

Again, share your thoughts and make your recommendations.  If I end up going with the subtitle that you recommend, I’m sure I will hook you up with something in the book, a mention, a blurb, a “what people are saying” thingy…  Thanks for your help!  Transcend The Isms’

A, B, C or D all of the above

A. College Football “My Sooners”- I have never seen as many upsets in the Top 25 in one week for as long as I can remember:  USC, GA, FL, WIS, W.F., Clem, & E.C.  I know how it feels as a Sooner fan to get upset… but not this year we are going to lay the smack down for the rest of the season.  The team that scares me just a little is OSU who just jumped into the top 25, their offense is sick, they had record attendance at their new stadium, we play them the last game of the season and they have been known to be a Sooner Spoiler.   Do you have any college football thoughts or smack talk?  Go ahead make my day!  Even you Dusty

B. Blog “An Open Apology“- A friend of mine Aaron Havens has this blog called An Open Apology with his buddy Jonathan.  This site is inspired by their book, in which they are currently pursuing a publishing deal.  The blog is designed to be owned/operated by the readers; as they journey together down the road of Christianity to Christ.  Go by and check them out and let them know BigIsTheNewSmall.com sent you.  Are we more concerned about being in love w/ Christianity and the systems than Christ Himself?

C. Book “Transcending The Isms”- I have been contemplating writing a book for quite some time now; as far back as my days in corrections and politics.  I have a bunch of thoughts, outlines, title suggestions, notes…  I might have just landed on a title for now; who knows it may change tomm.  The title was inspired by my post last week Transcending The Isms’.   Do You Have any thoughts on the title or suggestions?  Are there things that you have been contemplating doing, that you need to just getem’ done?

D. “All of The Above”- Share your thoughts on a A,B, C or D all of the above.  It’s Monday you can sound off on anything that you want.  If you didn’t get a chance to see the LifeChurch.tv message this weekend, you missed a good one, my man Herbert Cooper did an amazing job.  BTW- I forgot to ask, How Was Your Weekend?

Oprah's Book Club

If you are wondering where the title for this blog post came from; obviously there has to be a hidden agenda…  that agenda: It will definitely increase blog traffic!  If you want to know about blog titles you can check out my friend Terry Storch’s blog; Terry actually wrote book on blogging.   Terry has several posts where he talks about blog titles; you can check them out here.

I would actually like to here from all you who read this blog; even those of you who read through rss readers.  Here is the question and yes it relates to the title:

What are some good books that you are reading or have recently read?   It doesn’t matter if they are leadership, self-help, ministry…  just share some good reads, so we don’t have to go to Barnes & Nobles or Borders wandering/looking around for a good book.  I will share a bunch of books that I have read this year, recently read or am currently reading; check the comments later.

Books, Bibles & Blogs

Thankful 3 (of 4)

There are so many things that are readily accessible that I am extremely thankful for.  I am going to share three of them: Books, Blogs and Bibles:

Books:  We are taught from an early age the importance of reading and the impact it has on a child’s performance in other areas.  The same is true for adults; as our world becomes more complex reading helps us to figure out our place in it.  I don’t care what you read, just read something and be thankful for all of the books that you have access to.

Blogs:  Blogs have become a great tool for me to learn, develop relationships, be entertained and be stretched on a daily basis.  Blogs are impacting and changing the world in a major way.  Think of blogs from a historical perspective; how powerful would it have been to read Martin Luther King Jr.’s blog daily.  What if we could have read The First Letter of Peter through his blog or got a quote from Moses on his blog or if the Disciples were able to read each others blog?  I am thankful that I have the opportunity to blog and I have access to countless blogs.

Bibles: My Senior Pastor Craig Groeschel was asked a question in an interview by a ministry magazine; the question was “If you could have your people do one thing that would be most valuable for your church to change the world, what would it be?” Craig’s response “I would have our people daily read God’s word, and not just read it but do what it says.”  That is the bottom line truth; period, exclamation point.!  It is God’s Living Word!  You can watch Craig’s message here.

Are we thankful enough for God’s word that we read it daily and do what it says?  Share your thoughts on Books, Blogs and Bibles!
