The BIG Announcement #2

#3. Top 11 Posts Of 2011 (From March 2011)

Nearly 8 months ago I made “The BIG Announcement” which was a little play off of LeBron James making the decision to leave Cleveland and head out to South Florida and Join the Miami Heat. My “BIG Announcement” wasn’t that I signed with the Miami Heat, it was that I had signed an awesome book publishing deal with New Leaf Publishing Group, to publish my book Church Diversity – Sunday The Most Segregated Day Of The Week. It releases in April, you can check out the trailer for the book here.

It was about nine years ago that my wife and I walked through the doors of this new church that some friends had invited us to.  This church was much different than the churches that we had grown up in and the one that we were currently attending.  This new church had rock n’ roll type of music, no choir, no gospel music and for the most part we were one of only a few minority families.  We began to like everything about this church and God was speaking to our family in an new and fresh way.  That church was LifeChurch.tv, I think it was actually Life Covenant Church at that time.  We are much cooler now. 🙂

Although we loved our new church, we had this nagging question.  What is the heart and passion of this church as it relates to diversity?  As we didn’t see many other minorities.  I remember having lunch with Pastor Craig 9 years ago and I asked him that exact question, “Where is your heart as it relates to diversity?”  His response was, “I have a heart for diversity, will you help me.”  Fast forward 4 years of my family serving, connecting and loving LifeChurch.tv.  Fast forward another 5 years and I had the opportunity to lead and be a part of a team that launched, grew and developed a campus that truly embraced diversity.  Our staff was diverse, our worship team/platform was diverse, our congregation was diverse, we served a diverse community and a diverse group of people were surrendering their lives to Christ.  Diversity matters to God, the local church is the hope of the world, We Are Church Diversity!

Today I’m making another “BIG Announcement” to the BigIsTheNewSmall.com community. After nearly 9 years of being a part of LifeChurch.tv and five years of serving as the NW Oklahoma City Campus Pastor, my family and I have decided to move to a new season of ministry.  This new season was prompted by God’s calling on my life to share His message of Church Diversity with the global church.  With the full blessing of LifeChurch.tv leadership, we have openly and bitter-sweetly accepted this new season.

  • I absolutely love what God is doing at LifeChurch.tv.
  • My family is better because of Pastor Craig’s leadership.
  • The 5 years I served at the NW Oklahoma City Campus have been some of the best years of my life and I truly love, like and would go on vacation with every person that’s ever been a part of the n-dub staff.  I can’t even express how great it has been to be a part of such an amazing team, campus and community.  Thousands of lives have been changed at the n-dub since the doors first opened.
  • I have already made this announcement to the congregation, but my last official weekend will be this weekend.
  • I truly believe that the best years for my family and the n-dub have yet to some.

What will I be doing?  Where will I be going?

  • My family and I will stay right here. (Edmond, OK)
  • I have launched a consulting company and will be providing consulting to churches, non-profits, businesses and governmental agencies. We will focus on organizational growth both internally and externally. (Strategy, Leadership Development, New Media & Diversity)
  • I will be traveling, speaking and promoting God’s message of diversity in the church.
  • I will be doing some work for Outreach Magazine over at ChurchLeaders.com.
  • I will be scheduling a select number of weekend preaching dates.
  • I will be spending some QT with my family.
  • We will be making plans that will allow my wife to be a (SAHM) Stay At Home Mom.

I am really looking forward to this new season of dreaming BIG and thinking BIGGER. All of the doors that are being opened, could only be opened by God, He is definitely doing the orchestrating and we are being obedient!

The best days have yet to come…  dream BIG. think BIGGER.

Don’t Believe The Lies

As we go through the pages of life; we tell our life story page by page, decision by decision and belief by belief. Unfortunately, it’s easy to get trapped into the predicament of allowing the beliefs of others and the lies they tell us about ourselves to affect our personal beliefs.

If someone tells you that you don’t have what it takes — Don’t Believe The Lies.

If someone tells you that you’re too old or too young — Don’t Believe The Lies.

If someone tells you that it will never work — Don’t Believe The Lies.

If someone tells you that mountain is too tall to climb — Don’t Believe The Lies.

If someone tells you that you’re not ready — Don’t Believe The Lies.

If someone tells you something that’s not true about you, your situation or your potential — Don’t Believe The Lies. If you believe the lies, you’re a liar.

God has more for you, more than you could ever ask for, think about or imagine.  Start believing it and stop believing the lies.

“Success means doing the best we can with what we have. Success is the doing, not the getting; in the trying, not the triumph. Success is a personal standard, reaching for the highest that is in us, becoming all that we can be.” ~Zig Ziglar

The Best Apple Commercial Ever

This “Think Different” commercial is simply the best Apple commercial ever and it was created back in the late 1990’s. The “Think Different” campaign was a huge success and this commercial won an Emmy in 1998 for best commercial.

This epitomizes dream BIG. think BIGGER.

This is Seth Godin LinchPin kind of stuff and should inspire you to “Think Different.”

You Can Be Whatever You Want To Be

There is inside you
all of the potential to be whatever
you want to be
all of the energy to do whatever
you want to do.

Imagine yourself
as you would like to be,
doing what you want to do,
and each day, take one step
towards your dream.

And though at times it may seem too
difficult to continue,
hold on to your dream.

One morning you will awake to find
that you are the person
you dreamed of
doing what you wanted to do
simply because you had the courage
to believe in your potential
and to hold on to your dream.

BIG News. BIG Ideas.

It’s time for some BIG News as in BigIsTheNewSmall.com kinda BIG News.  I have been thinking through some BIG Ideas for BigIsTheNewSmall.com for 2011 and I have a few working.

Let me share a couple of the BIG Ideas with you and we will get them kicked off today.

  • BIG Idea #1.  BIG GiveBack – I am going to give away a months worth of FREE advertising on BigIsTheNewSmall.com.  1 FREE 125×125 Advertising Spot $200 value.  My thought is to help promote some businesses, ideas, blogs, books, CD’s, causes, charities or whatever else you share, that I agree to promote.  The concept is simple, I’ll share a blogpost about the Big Giveback and anyone can share why I should choose their endeavor.  I’ll choose one, you provide the graphic for the advertisement and we will do again the next month.
  • Consider this post as your opportunity to begin sharing this month.  I’ll select the winner on Thurs. January 20th. I’ll announce the Winner on January 21st and the ad will go up on Feb. 1st.  Once you share simply Tweet or share on your facebook status that you just shared a BIG Idea for the #BigGiveBack at BigIsTheNewSmall.com.  I encourage readers, to comment or give feedback on any of the ideas that you like.
  • BIG Idea #2. BigGiveAway – Last month I did a #BigGiveAway of an iPad in conjunction with promoting my man Wayne Elsey’s new book, Almost Isn’t Good Enough.  This #BigGiveAway received thousands upon thousands of hits on the link provided and many more hits in general.  We had over 700 comments, 700 Retweets from the site and many more RT’s and Facebook postings. To top it all off Sonny Lemmons won an iPad. Check Out the Post Here. My thought is that I’m going to offer this as another advertising opportunity. Here are the details, you provide an item that you want to promote in conjunction with a #BigGiveAway with a value of at-least $600 and you give me one of the things that you’re giving away.
  • For instance an iPad to give away and an iPad for me to have.  You could give away a branding, logo, design package or website package and you give me one of the same.  I will either keep what you give me for personal use or I might decide to #GiveBack and bless someone else.  This promotion will feature a blogpost on Friday and the promo will run from Friday until Monday with full promotion.  Everyone will have a chance to win and the winners will be randomly selected.  This will happen once a month, with the first opportunity kicking off in February.  Only 11 slots left for the year.  Of course I have to agree with what you are wanting to give away.  If you are interested in doing the #BigGiveAway shoot me an email above.

If You would like to be considered for the #BigGiveBack leave a comment below and share it on your Facebook or Twitter.  Consider the 3C’s: Be Convincing, Creative and Compelling.

Competition Makes You Better

No matter how you slice it, the harsh reality is that competition makes you better.  If you look at the parity in college football this year, it’s a result of competition forcing teams in all conferences to get better.  If they weren’t good this year they will be better next year.

This same concept applies to churches, often times churches will elevate their game when a new church pops up in their area of reach.  The increasing number of mom and pop coffee shops caused Starbucks to take stock of who they were, what they stood for and elevated their game.  As a result Starbucks has asked employees to slow down and for baristas to spend more time on each individual cup of coffee.

If you don’t believe that Competition Makes You Better, wait until next month.  I can guarantee that the king of dropped calls “AT&T” will get better when the new iPhone Sheriff “Verizon” rolls in to town.

The lack of competition screams for complacency and mediocrity.

Don’t shy away from competition, embrace it.  It only makes you better.

Do you think competition makes you better?  Do you think AT&T will get better?  How have you seen this principle played out?

Done!

Last night I completed my book… Done!  Done is a great feeling.

Thanks for the prayers, encouragement and commitment to pick up a copy when it lands in a bookstore or digital device near you.  Of course done with writing, equates to the beginning of all of the fun stuff with publishing, marketing and getting the word out.

My prayer is that this book will be a tool to help foster the necessary conversations and begin changing the fact that Sunday is The Most Segregated Day Of The Week.

The only feeling that’s as good as being done, is the feeling of just getting started.  Today, I’m experiencing both.

What are you in the process of completing or just getting started?

Too Young To Lead

#11. Top 11 Posts of 2011

I was recently doing some consulting with a team of sharp ministry leaders.  During the course of our conversation, the discussion of someone being “too young to lead” came up.  This is actually a frequent conversation that I have with leaders.

There are varying opinions on the continuum of being too young and it carries on through all stages of a leaders life.  There are 20 year olds not ready for XYZ position and 40 year olds not ready for ABC executive position.

My thoughts are simple:  It’s the person, experience, capacity, potential and belief in the person that matters — not the age.  The more important question than, “Are they to young to lead?” is the question, “Are you too old, shallow-minded and stuck in your ways?”  that you can’t see that God is raising up King David type leaders at a much earlier age.

Believe in the next generation, open your mind, open your heart, drop your stereotypes and you will have a different perception about being Too Young To Lead.

What do you think?

Daniel Fast 2011 #Fast11

Yesterday our church kicked off a 21 day fast.  For most participants, it will be the Daniel Fast.  Last year was the first year to do this as an entire church family and it was truly amazing.

My wife and I look forward to this corporate fast and spiritual connection.  I will do about 3-5 days of water only and then join her in the Daniel Fast.

We are fasting, praying, reading His word, believing, dreaming BIG and thinking BIGGER.

2011 is The Year…  No Excuses!

Does your church do any sort of fast?  If so what type?

How can I pray for you?

2011 Motto – “No Excuses!”

At the conclusion of each calendar year I start to plan, plot, dream, think and prepare to make things happen in the upcoming year.  I have a “System for Success” that I line out, that contributes to making things happen in the upcoming year. I’ll probably write another blogpost, sharing my “System for Success” or “Strategy for Success.”  There isn’t really a formal name for it, it’s just something that I do.  2010 was definitely a year where the Strategy or System was definitely working.

As I was thinking of a quote or something to share this morning, the simple thought of “No Excuses” came to mind.  I will often use this in leading my family, my team and as good ol’ encouragement for others.  What is “No Excuses” all about?  It’s simple “Stop making excuses and start making it happen.”

I remember my college days when I was pledging to become a member of my fraternity (Alpha Phi Alpha).  We used to always recite this little saying, over and over and over.  “Excuses are tools of incompetence, used to build monuments of nothingness. Those who specialize in using them seldom amount to to anything… Excuses, Excuses!”

This week my family will gather at the table to set individual and family goals and game-plans.  I will encourage everyone to dream BIG. think BIGGER. with the caveat of “No Excuses!

2011 is the year to make things happen… No Excuses!

What is your motto for 2011?  Will you adopt the “No Excuses” motto?
