Learning To Expect Great Things

expect great thingsSuccess and great things come to those who expect it and those who step out and make it happen. The key to success is living from the spirit of expectancy. Do you expect great things to happen? Do you expect to succeed? Do you expect to win? Starting from a position of “Absolutely I do!” is critical to success.

Michael Jordan expected to win, make big shots and win multiple championships. LeBron James expected himself to be a superstar fresh out of high school. Steve Jobs expected Apple to be an iconic brand that would change the face of technology. The founders of Twitter expected the information machine known as Twitter to one day be a big deal and a publicly traded juggernaut. Billy Graham expected to take his crusades and the Gospel message around the world. Rick Warren expected Purpose Driven Life to give people a life of purpose. Despite the ups and downs, Tim Tebow expects great things and expects to be a great example.

Each and every success story has a tipping point where the person, organization or team expected great things to happen. That doesn’t mean they didn’t have to work hard, nor does it mean they expected the ultimate degree of success; however they simply learned to expect great things.

If we don’t expect great things to happen, there is a good chance they won’t, as we will always find ways to step into the world of the negative self-fulfilling prophecy. Conversely, if we learn to expect great things, we will find great things around the corner and will remain on the road of success. Remember success is a journey, not a destination.

Think It – See It – Believe It – Expect It…

The older I get the more I’m learning what a spirit of expectancy is all about. I’m understanding the importance of expecting great things from a Great God, I’m also understanding the importance of doing great things for a Great God.

11 Simple Keys To Success

success1

I won’t make this post complicated.

I’ll get straight to the point.

11 Simple Keys To Success

This title is actually misleading, success isn’t simple. Although success isn’t simple, the keys below can help you get down the road of success Further, Farther, Faster.

“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.”

~Harriet Tubman

  • 1.) Believe that you will succeed (believing is the key to receiving)
  • 2.) Deprive yourself of sleep from time to time (stay up late and wake up early)
  • 3.) Work hard (success comes to those who work hard)
  • 4.) Remove the distractions (remove yourself from the negative people, places and things)
  • 5.) Learn from the best (do your homework, research online and face-to-face, learning is key)
  • 6.) Fail (the road of success has many mile markers of mistakes and failures)
  • 7.) Stop being scared (fear is the prison where success is confined)
  • 8.) Stay hungry (eating and having a little success is great, keep an appetite for more is greater)
  • 9.) Love what you do (if you are having success at something you don’t love, that’s not success that’s called a little win. Don’t succeed hoping that you will love what you are doing, love what you’re doing and success will come.)
  • 10.) Focus on the things that matter (if you succeed at work and fail at home, you’ve ultimately failed. There will be seasons of working a little harder, faster, later and earlier… that’s okay as long as there is a purpose and plan behind them. Success isn’t simply about you, it’s about opportunities for you and your family, as well as the opportunity to influence the world. Again, if you are succeeding in your career and failing at home, you’re ultimately failing. Success at home and work are not mutually exclusive, they can co-exist, but you must make a point to focus on the things that matter.”
  • 11.) Dream Big. Think Bigger (Everything begins with an idea, every dream has a dreamer… don’t just chase your dreams, catch your dreams and live your dreams.”

“To succeed in life, you need two things: ignorance and confidence.” ~Mark Twain

You Will Never Be Ready!!! You Are Ready!!!

ready

Oftentimes people wait until they are “ready” to take that leap, risk, opportunity, chance or step. The problem with this approach is they will never be “ready” therefore they will never get started. If you look at “ready” as a destination, I repeat – “You Will Never Be Ready!” If you begin to look at “ready” as a state of willingness, you will stand “ready.”

If you remain willing, you will remain ready.

10 Excuses People Make

excuse

People want to succeed, but find excuses as to why they can’t.

People want a better marriage, but find excuses as to why they don’t.

People want a better job, but find excuses as to why they can’t.

People want to get in shape, but find excuses as to why they won’t.

People want to change themselves, but find excuses as to why they can’t.

People want to change the world, but find excuses as to why they won’t.

People want to be great, but find excuses as to why mediocre is better.

People want to be better parents, but find excuses as to why the aren’t.

People want to kick bad habits, but find excuses as to why the can’t.

People want to be like so and so, but find excuses as to why they can’t.

People make way too many excuses.

If it’s important to you, you will find a way… if not you’ll find an excuse.

Stop Making Excuses!!!

Admit It… You’re Wrong!!!

wrong 2Failing to admit you’re wrong doesn’t make you right. It doesn’t make the mistake go away and it doesn’t mean people will assume that you had good intentions.

The willingness to admit that you’re wrong is a huge key to success for any leader, business, parent, organization, marriage etc. Unfortunately, folks expend gargantuan amounts of energy avoiding the admittance of the fact that they were wrong, trying cover up their wrongs and hoping their wrongs will somehow make a right. One, two or three wrongs don’t make a right; however the admittance of a wrong is definitely a gigantic step in the right direction.

Failing To Admit That You’re Wrong is just wrong and it’s an ultimate roadblock to success. Acknowledge, Admit, Correct and Proceed.

44 #MLK Quotes (All Retweetable)

Just imagine if Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had Twitter or other social networking applications at his disposal, his message would have been even more world changing.  He was known as one of the best orators of his day and one of the top in the history of the country.  The exponential impact of his sound bites and oratory skills would have been extremely powerful with a tool like Twitter.

I believe we take for granted the fact that our message, story, voice and thoughts can literally be globally shared at our leisure and by the push of a button.  This year in the United States we set aside Monday, January 16th. to honor the life of a civil rights leader, pastor and social justice martyr.  MLK positively impacted the US and the world in so many ways, I think it’s great the US has an official holiday in his honor.

Last year, my wife and I were in Atlanta during the MLK Holiday. We visited the Atlanta Memorial and the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church that Dr. King pastored. This summer we took our sons and visited the MLK  Memorial at the National Mall in Washington DC and stood at the very place he delivered his famous “I Have A Dream” speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial.

This year I’m sharing 44 of Dr. King’s memorable quotes that could have easily  been tweets. 44 in remembrance of 44 years ago he sacrificed his life so that we could dream. Not only are they tweetable (at 140 characters or less), they are all short enough to be retweetable (122 characters or less).  Quotes can have such power, as a matter of fact I used a number of Dr. King’s quotes to illustrate some power points in my book.

Ray Lewis’ Inspirational Post Game Interview

Above is Ray Lewis’ Inspirational Post Game Interview after the Ravens defeated the Broncos in a double overtime 1st round playoff game… He wore a shirt with Psalm 91 on it last week and this week’s Post Game is laced with scripture and God inspiration all over it.

Ray Lewis inspires me and I think his retirement season is going to inspire many, as he leads the Baltimore Ravens to a Super Bowl victory. There is something special about what’s going on with the end of his career and the beginning of his life post football. Every time I hear him speak, I learn a lot and walk away inspired. There seems to be a special anointing on his life.

What do you think? Share your thoughts on this interview and the miraculous nature of this post game since his retirement announcement.

Don’t Get Distracted

Distractions are the biggest inhibitors to reaching goals and a become great roadblocks on the road of success. The problem with distractions is they come in all shapes, forms and fashions. Unfortunately, distractions are generally self-imposed. Individuals constantly make decisions to allow these things to take them away from those things, which ultimately takes them away from the most important things.

Often times sin works the same way; it’s the result of a little distraction over here and next thing you know your decisions are way over there. Getting distracted is a choice and if you want to be successful and have a fruitful journey, you must learn to stay focused and choose not to get distracted.

This African Proverb says it best:

“The lion does not turn around when a small dog barks.” ~African Proverb

You are a lion, you are on a mission, don’t get distracted when the small dog aka “Distractions” bark.

Thoughts? Do you find yourself getting distracted? Have distractions inhibited your success?

You Can Watch Greatness or Choose To Be Great

We live in a world where there is greatness all around us. We get to watch our favorite TV programs with all of the great actors and actresses. Right now we are in the middle of the NBA Playoffs where we get to watch the greatest basketball players in the world battle it out on the court. We get to attend conferences and hear from some of brightest minds and the greatest speakers of our time.

We simply get to sit and watch greatness. We get to imagine what greatness could be and get a little glimpse of what it is. We get to watch greatness all around us and often times we are in awe because of it.

I was watching a little singing competition called American Idol where people who watched greatness for years decided to take a shot at becoming great. Twelve made it to the top, two made it to the finale and there was one great winner. What changed with these top 12? They chose to be great, they gave it a chance, they stepped in the ring, they got off the sidelines and they got in the game.

“Greatness is inside of you” is not some random quote or saying… it’s truth. You have potential for greatness, it’s time that you reach your God potential.

“Forget about likes and dislikes. They are of no consequence. Just do what must be done. This may not be happiness but it is greatness.” ~George Bernard Shaw

Where There Is No Vision The People Perish – Tanzania (Day 2)

Today we kicked off Day 2 of our #Compassion #Tanzania trip bright and early with a little breakfast prior to heading to the AICT African Island Church Tanzania. For the sake of wordiness and consistency, I’ll simply refer to this project as AITC. This was an amazing experience, amazing project, amazing kids and the potential for this project is off the charts. AICT is a relatively new project serving over 250 kids. Of the 250+ kids in the project only 53 of those kids are still in need of a sponsor.

You can actually sponsor a kid specifically from the AICT project by clicking this link… (see pics below) Last time I checked there were 16 kids available on the Compassion site from this particular project and plenty of other kids in need of a sponsor from Tanzania. LaKendria and I are excited about sponsoring a child from Tanzania.

Each day I’m taking in so much information, emotions and stories. Todays emotions were filled with the joys of seeing these little kids have so much fun playing the basic children playground games, smiling for the camera, being mesmerized by my white hellosomebody (hello freedom) watch (see pic below), kids sharing their testimonies, kids singing, the vision the Project Director has for AICT and the list of joys go on and on like this run-on rambling sentence. The entire Compassion Bloggers team left with joyful memories.

On the flip-side of the joyful emotions you had the sadness that came with visiting the home of a poverty stricken family of this 3-year-old little girl Latecia. Latecia is in need of a Sponsor and her mother and brother are in need of hope. (see pic below) We were able to pray over the family, prayers to help them to find the hope that can only be found in Christ. This family has to walk 15 minutes one-way to get water and often times they are unable to afford it. Coming from the US where we have plenty and going to a place like Tanzania, where extreme poverty seems to be par for the course… no matter how you slice it, the emotion of sadness is triggered.

The great thing about seeing extreme poverty and being faced with the question of “What am I going to do about it?” Fortunately, for answsering that question as it relates to Tanzania, God is already doing some amazing work through Compassion International’s holistic ministry approach. With Compassion $38 a month can answer that question of “What am I going to do about it.” $38 a month basically provides:

  • Food and Clean Drinking Water
  • Medical Care and Advocacy
  • Educational Opportunities
  • Life-skills and Leadership Training
  • Understanding Of What It Means To Have a Lifelong relationship with Jesus.

In my opinion I feel that the key to the success of Compassion’s Projects in under-served communities around the globe is the fact that they are Christ centered and a have a clear vision to serve the spiritual, physical, social and educational needs of children in need around the world and right here in Tanzania. As a pastor, I have always embraced the fact that vision is critical to success:

Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keeps the law, happy is he. Proverbs 29:18

I loved hearing Samson’s vision for the Project. Samson is the Project Director (see pic below) and his vision is a laundry list of things that he wants to accomplish by 2022. Everything from every child being sponsored, new classroom space, additional office space and a plethora of other things that will allow them to serve more kids. He had a 10-year plan filled with hope, joy, success and a plan to realize their potential. He was excited about what could be and had an expectant heart for what will be.

I loved hearing this young man named James that is part of the AICT Project bring the word today… (see pic below)  He spoke a Biblical message about vision and God’s love for the children. Coinceidentally I mean God put his fingerprint on this trip as 10-year-old James spoke from Matthew 19:13-14, which is exactly the scripture God gave me to share in my post from yesterday. As he was preaching, Shaun Groves and I just looked at each other and smiled as this young man spoke a powerful vision message about God’s love for the children and what can be.
Compassion international is changing the life course for children in poverty around the globe. You, your family and friends can be a part of that life-change for a nominal commitment. Everyone will end up somewhere; however few will end up somewhere on purpose. Compassion international sponsors have already helped 1.2 million kids chart a new course through sponsorship. Many of you reading this post have helped to make that 1.2 million happen and others of you will be a part of making the next 1.2 million happen.

“Vision without action is a dream. Action without vision is simply passing the time. Action with Vision is making a positive difference.” ~Joel Barker

Compassion has action with vision… Be a Part Of The Vision Today.

I am going to ask you that question again… You see the problem, you hear the vision, “What are you going to do about it?” Sponsor a child from Tanzania right here.

Share your thoughts on the importance of vision.

Would you agree that Compassion’s success and holistic approach makes it an organization with Action & Vision?
