Why You Should Find Your Replacement

I have always been a firm believer in the notion that leaders should always plan ahead. Not only should leaders plan ahead, they should always try to be a couple of steps ahead of their team members. By a couple of steps ahead I’m primarily referring to the thought processes that lead to success. You find me any successful leader and I will bet you they do an excellent job of thinking and planning ahead.

Just because you are two steps ahead in thought, doesn’t mean that you have to be two steps ahead in action. When I was a young 25 year old Warden, my boss and mentor sat me down and said this, “Scott you are always a couple of steps ahead of your staff, you are going to have to learn to be patient, allow them to get some bumps and bruises.  It’s great that you think ahead, but be sure to teach and lead along the way.”  In other-words, he was saying think ahead, but don’t let your thoughts get ahead of your staff’s development.

Sometimes, I feel like the “Activator” in me has caused me to take this forward thinking to a whole nutha’ level. As a matter of fact, I feel like leaders should always have a replacement for every team member in the back of their mind. I encourage my team members to always know who their replacement would be, or at-least who they would recommend. This might seem like an odd concept, but in all reality it forces you to evaluate where you are and think of individuals who can grab the baton and take off running where you left off.

I have come to realize that staff actually appreciate the fact that their leader has people in mind that could actually do their job and potentially do it better.  Find Your Replacement! It’s not a secret and it’s not being disrespectful to existing team members, this openness creates a constant flow of leadership development. Find Your Replacement mindset encourages people to live with an abundance mentality as opposed to a scarcity mentality. There are more than enough talented leaders to go around, Find Your Replacement!

When I served as a Pastor at LifeChurch.tv, there was a season where we had the opportunity to make several key pastoral staff changes in a short period of time. These changes were all great Kingdom moves, in which people were elevated to different roles within the organization. As each of these changes happened, the new team members replaced the old team members simultaneously. These were extremely talented people who were replaced with extremely talented people and our team didn’t miss a beat. There is no guarantee that it’s always going to work out so smoothly; however I can guarantee you that the odds will be in stacked in your favor with a Find Your Replacement mentality.

Find Your Replacement and remember there are more than enough great leaders to go around.  Seek God, start looking, start dreaming, start thinking and start finding replacements.  dream BIG. think BIGGER.

A wise man thinks ahead; a fool doesn’t and even brags about it! Proverbs 13:16 LB

Should this strategy be a part of every leader’s gameplan?

Amazing Life Lesson From Derek Fisher Going To The Oklahoma City Thunder

The 5 Championship Ring NBA Veteran Point Guard Derek Fisher was traded to the Houston Rockets and worked a buyout and chose to play with the Oklahoma City Thunder.  As a Thunder fan that really excites me for the future and champion aspirations. Then Thunder will now have both Harden & Fisher who can both do some damage off of the bench.

Fisher chose to wear number 37, because as he simply states, “that’s my age.” The 16 year NBA veteran and President of the NBA Players Union has lots of life experience, knowledge and wisdom that is represented by that #37 Thunder Jersey that he now proudly wears.

Fisher’s classy persona fits well with the classy bunch of Oklahoma City Thunder players and the best fans in the NBA. In life we have lots of situations and experiences where we can learn some major life lessons if we are willing to open our eyes. I think there is major life lesson for everyone from Derek Fisher’s trade and acquisition.  Read through the life lesson in this statement that Fisher made yesterday:

“Like I stated earlier, I’m going to do my best right now to refrain from focusing too much, if at all, on what has transpired, what was said, what could have happened, what should have happened,” Fisher said. “I’m more focused on the positives of why I’m here. I’ll be able to address those things in due time…. Right now it’s about the Thunder and Oklahoma City.” ~Derek Fisher

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 1 Peter 5:6

Stop focusing on what has transpired but rather what God has for you.

Check out this video below of Fisher’s 1st appearance in a Thunder Uniform (Standing Ovation)

What To Do When Those Around You Don’t Believe In You

Belief in people is of paramount importance as it relates to the success that they will have.  As a matter of fact, believing in others is the fuel that propels them down the road to success.

What should you do when those around you don’t believe in you?

You should find a different group of people to surround yourself with.  If the people that don’t believe in you are friends and family, limit your interactions with them, tell them they’re wrong and more importantly prove them wrong.

“Some are destined to succeed, some are determined to succeed.” ~H.H. Swami

You tend to become who those closest and most important to you think you will become. Choose those that are most important and closest to you wisely.

Share your thoughts and experiences with both sides of this coin.

What To Do When Opportunity Knocks

When it comes to opportunities, there are types of people – Waiters and Makers.  Not referring to waiter from the more traditional sense of waiting tables at a restaurant, but from the perspective of someone who sits around and waits.

Think about waiter from the early 14th century definition, where a waiter was a watchman or attendant and their primary duty was to sit around and watch.

Again, when it comes to understanding how people interact with the opportunities of life, there are two types of people – waiters and makers.

  • Waiters – those who sit around and wait on the opportunities to come to them.
  • Makers – those who create opportunities and make opportunities happen.

When opportunity knocks the waiter sits around waiting for someone else to open the door and that someone else is the maker whose ready to make things happen.  When opportunity knocks, answer the door.  If opportunity doesn’t knock, kick the door down.

“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” ~Seneca

Seize the opportunity!

Are you a Waiter or a Maker?

Don’t Get Distracted

I read a profound African Proverb last week that challenged my thinking and it should challenge yours as well.  It should challenge you to not get distracted by people, events and thoughts that in the grand scheme of things really don’t matter.

Don’t get distracted by the critics, successes, bumps in the road, temporary setbacks or things that you don’t understand or don’t have any control over.

The result of those distractions will be a premature exit from the road to success.

The primary reason people fail is not because they don’t have the skills or abilities, they fail because they get distracted.  There will always be plenty of opportunities for success and there will be even more opportunities to get distracted.  Stay focused and Don’t Get Distracted.

“The lion does not turn around when a small dog barks.”

~African Proverb

Are you getting distracted?

2012 Motto — “Go BIG!” #goBIG

At the conclusion of each calendar year I start to plan, plot, dream, think and prepare to make things happen in the upcoming year.  I have a “System for Success” comprised of quarterly goal setting and tools for follow-through that contributes to making things happen in the upcoming year. Putting God first coupled with this “System for Success” has produced colossal results for my family and I.

As I was thinking of my motto for 2012, two words simply came to mind.  Those two words are “Go Big!”  My blog and personal mantra has been dream BIG. think BIGGER. for the last four or so years. Go BIG is a close cousin to dream BIG. think BIGGER.   This year I will use #goBIG when leading my family, my clients, mentees and as general encouragement for others.

What is #goBIG all about?  It’s simple: Go BIG, Take Risks, Don’t Play It Safe, Step Out, Put Your Cards On The Table, Pursue Those Dreams, Start That Business…

  • #goBIG For God
  • #goBIG For Family
  • #goBIG For Everything else

Theologian Williams Shedd says it this way, “A ship is safe at harbor, but that’s not what ships are for.”   The same is true for you, you are safe on the sidelines, you are safe doing more of the same, you are safe settling for what is rather than searching for what could be, you are safe settling…  That’s not you were made for, you were made to #goBIG.

Seize life! Eat bread with gusto, Drink wine with a robust heart. Oh yes-God takes pleasure in your pleasure! Dress festively every morning. Don’t skimp on colors and scarves. Relish life with the spouse you love Each and every day of your precarious life. Each day is God’s gift. It’s all you get in exchange For the hard work of staying alive. Make the most of each one! Whatever turns up, grab it and do it. And heartily! This is your last and only chance at it, For there’s neither work to do nor thoughts to think In the company of the dead, where you’re most certainly headed. ~Ecclesiastes 9:7-11 MSG

Each day is God’s gift, open your gift daily, Seize Life and #goBIG.

This week my family will gather at the table to set individual and family goals.  We will implement game plans and systems for success in 2012.  I will encourage everyone to dream BIG. think BIGGER. with the caveat this year of “#goBig!

2012 is the year to #goBIG!

Are you committed to #goBIG in 2012?  What’s your motto for 2012?

How To Live A God-Shaped Life

A God-Shaped Life — (Prov. 11:17-32 MSG)

When you’re kind to others, you help yourself; when you’re cruel to others, you hurt yourself.

Bad work gets paid with a bad check; good work gets solid pay.

Take your stand with God’s loyal community and live, or chase after phantoms of evil and die.

God can’t stand deceivers, but oh how he relishes integrity.

Count on this: The wicked won’t get off scot-free, and God’s loyal people will triumph.

Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful face on an empty head.

The desires of good people lead straight to the best, but wicked ambition ends in angry frustration.

The world of the generous gets larger and larger; the world of the stingy gets smaller and smaller.

The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed; those who help others are helped.

Curses on those who drive a hard bargain! Blessings on all who play fair and square!

The one who seeks good finds delight; the student of evil becomes evil.

A life devoted to things is a dead life, a stump; a God-shaped life is a flourishing tree.

Exploit or abuse your family, and end up with a fistful of air; common sense tells you it’s a stupid way to live.

A good life is a fruit-bearing tree; a violent life destroys souls.

If good people barely make it, what’s in store for the bad!

Thoughts?

The Power Of Pressing On

Success is one of those things that many want to achieve but only a few are willing to put in the work necessary to achieve it.  Success is a journey, it’s a road traveled and if you want it, you must go after it.  If you want to succeed you must have an unwavering determination.

We have all heard the sayings, the quotes, the inspirational speeches etc.  In a nutshell, “If you want to succeed, you have to stop talking about it and be about it.  Talk is cheap.  Hard work pays off and there is no substitute for determination.”

In the words of our 30th President Mr. Calvin Coolidge: “Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan “press on” has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race”

There is power in pressing on…  Be determined, be someone who presses on.

Why are so many people unwilling to press on?  Why do so many people quit before they succeed?  Why are more people not willing to do what the mouse is doing in the above picture?

You

                     You

You were made for more

You must stop settling for less

You are a story yet to be told

You must rise up and be bold

You need to stop focusing on them

You shall long to remember that You are a product of Him
