The Nontrepreneur

faith2There are so many entrepreneurs that never seem to get their entrepreneurial ship to set sail. They have the ideas, the vision, the story, the expertise, the ability… but they lack the faith to make it happen. Notice I didn’t say they lack the finances, the support or the opportunity. Entrepreneurs are individuals who take a series of faith steps to pursue what’s already inside of them.

Unfortunately, most people never realize their entrepreneurial dreams because they settle for being The Nontrepreneur. The Nontrepreneur has all the potential to be a successful entrepreneur but they settle for helping someone else achieve their goals  and dreams instead of pursuing their own.

To those that are stuck in chasm on Nontrepreneurism, allow that to be temporary and motivation for the entrepreneurial success that is to come. You have to chase after what is inside of you, otherwise what’s inside of you will slowly eat you up like the drippy faucet of regret. The late Steve Jobs says it this way:

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” ~Steve Jobs

Remember, no successful entrepreneur ever jumped to the finish line of success, they all started their journey by planning, plotting and taking that single step of faith. Mr. and Mrs. Nontrepreneur it’s time that you get to stepping.

How To Create A Culture Of Movement and Become A Molder Of Consensus

consensus1Trying hard, working hard and managing can often times be confused with leading.  Leadership is about leading people and creating a natural movement.  Leaders lead people, managers manage things.  A leader should be in the business of creating a culture of movement, a culture of action and a culture of success.

You might ask, “How does a leader do this?”  Leaders are either innately gifted at leading or develop an ability to create buy-in to what they’re selling.  They are able to sell their leadership with a compelling vision and more importantly what’s inside of them is compelling.  Leaders don’t sit around and wait on the wind to blow or people to tell them what to do.   Leaders get things done and develop an army of people to get it done with them.

Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus.”  That is one of the most true statements about leadership, it’s not about searching for others to provide answers.  Leadership is about pointing towards a destination and walking the walk until you get there.  If you walk the walk and people believe in what you are selling they will follow you.

If you are molding a sculpture into a beautiful work of art, it takes time to shape, create and form.  The same is true for leadership, it takes time to mold, create and shape a leadership culture of success.

Stop searching for consensus and start molding consensus.

Why You Are Choosing To Fail and Failing To Admit It

fail1You are failing because you are unwilling to run after the things that God has placed in your heart. You are failing because you are settling for a job that you don’t even like. You are failing because you are settling for a relationship that you know is not God’s best. You are failing because you are putting your work over your family.

Yes, there are areas where you are choosing the letter grade of “F.”

Not only are you failing, but you are failing to admit it.

If you admit that you are failing, that would mean that you accept the fact that you have the power to do something about it. That’s a hard truth, a sobering reality and if viewed through the right lens, it’s a dose of motivation.

Stop choosing to fail and failing to admit.

Don’t Be A Servant Of Regret

regretLife is full of fears, thoughts and haunting decisions. Often times the most haunting of all decisions are the regretful ones. Regret is like the constant thumping of a drum, over and over and over and over. You ask yourself why, you tell yourself that you should have and wonder what would have happened if you would have.

The only time you really live fully is from thirty to sixty. The young are slaves to dreams; the old servants of regrets. Only the middle-aged have all their five senses in the keeping of their wits.

~Theodore Roosevelt

I think Theodore Roosevelt was on to something, unfortunately I think in this day and age even those 30-60 year olds are servants to regret. Regret cripples your ability to dream, slows down your ability to move and threatens your ability to succeed.

Whatever regret you have, let it go! Don’t even try to let it be something that fuels you. Regret is to powerful of a constant drum beat to beome your motivation, it will end up being a huge distraction (thump, thump, thump.)

Drop the past, focus on the future! Don’t Be A Servant Of Regret

Listening To The Wrong Voices

success8You problem isn’t the fact that you are unequipped to succeed, your problem is the fact that you are listening to the wrong voices. Stop listening to the naysayers, the haters, the Negative Nancy’s, the doubters and the little negative voice inside your head.

If you want to succeed, you must stop listening to the wrong voices and start listening to the right voices.

Learn to tune out the voices of doubt, discouragement and disappointment. Learn to tune in to the voices that speak to your success. You Can! You Will! and You Did!

Your success depends on your ability to tune into the proper frequencies frequently.

As you are tuning your dial, the 1st voice you need to learn to tune into, is the Voice Of God. He always believes in you and wants you to succeed.

3 Easy Steps To Move From Couch Potato To Entrepreneur

couch-potatoWhen you hear the term couch potato, often times you think of a lazy, slouchy individual who sits around on the couch watching television and eating potato chips. There may be some truth to that; however I tend to look at a couch potato as anyone who is sitting on the “couch” or “sidelines” of life and not reaching their potential.

As somewhat of a serial entrepreneur myself, I often end up in conversations with aspiring entrepreneurs. Often times their biggest frustration is getting started and an inability to reach their goals. More often than not, the biggest inhibitor of them reaching their entrepreneurial goals is not ability, it’s the fact that they are sitting on the couch and not willing to take a step. If you want to be a successful entrepreneur, here are 3 Easy Steps To Move From Couch Potato To Entrepreneur:

  • 1.) You must demonstrate initiative. (Think)
  • 2.) You must be willing to step out. (Start)
  • 3.) You must agree to take some risks. (Try)

                                      Think > Start > Try

By definition an en-tre-pre-neur: a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk.

The definition of entrepreneur says it all. Entrepreneurs must demonstrate initiative and be willing to take some risks. Every successful entrepreneur story began with the decision to try and is laced with stories of failure and risk along the way. Many people have a desire to become a flourishing entrepreneur; however only a small percentage are successful. That large percent is sitting on the couch. If you want to move from Couch Potato to Entrepreneur your first step is to get off the couch. (Mentally and Physically)

The Top 5 Reasons You Will Succeed

success2When it comes to success, people consistently find themselves pondering these questions: Will I succeed? How will I succeed? and When will I succeed?

Instead of focussing on those questions, get right to the answers. Yes you will succeed, if you truly believe that you will succeed and as long as you don’t give up success will happen. Change your mindset, believe, have faith, work hard and know that failure is part of the success journey.

The Top 5 Reasons You Will Succeed

  • 1.) You set goals
  • 2.) You believe you will succeed
  • 3.) You work hard
  • 4.) You embrace failure
  • 5.) You never give up

“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” ~Michael Jordan

Keep shooting the shots of life.

This Is Why You Fail

failDo you want to know why you fail?

Look in the mirror.

There is no way around it. We can make excuses, look at various scenarios, evaluate factors, point fingers and make countless excuses along the way. You are the reason that you fail. It’s your thoughts, your beliefs, your decisions and your actions.

Don’t beat yourself up about the fact that you are the reason that you fail. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

Here is the light: You Are The Reason You Succeed. Of course you need God’s blessing, help from others, mentorship and opportunities to present themselves. More importantly, you need to understand and tap into the same things that cause you to fail in order to have real success. It’s your thoughts, your beliefs, your decisions and your actions that will lead to your success.

Now Go Succeed.

44 Retweetable #MLK Quotes

mlkJust imagine if Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had Twitter or other social networking applications at his disposal, his message would have been even more world changing.  He was known as one of the best orators of his day and one of the top in the history of the country.  The exponential impact of his sound bites and oratory skills would have been extremely powerful with a tool like Twitter.

I believe we take for granted the fact that our message, story, voice and thoughts can literally be globally shared at our leisure and by the push of a button.  This year in the United States we set aside Monday, January 16th. to honor the life of a civil rights leader, pastor and social justice martyr.  MLK positively impacted the US and the world in so many ways, I think it’s great the US has an official holiday in his honor.

Last year, my wife and I were in Atlanta during the MLK Holiday. We visited the Atlanta Memorial and the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church that Dr. King pastored. This summer we took our sons and visited the MLK  Memorial at the National Mall in Washington DC and stood at the very place he delivered his famous “I Have A Dream” speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial.

This year I’m sharing 44 of Dr. King’s memorable quotes that could have easily  been tweets. 44 in remembrance of 44 years ago he sacrificed his life so that we could dream. Not only are they tweetable (at 140 characters or less), they are all short enough to be retweetable (122 characters or less).  Quotes can have such power, as a matter of fact I used a number of Dr. King’s quotes to illustrate some power points in my book.

You Don’t Have All The Answers

answersOften times we never get the opportunity to engage in our full life potential, due to the fact that we find ourselves standing still at the starting line. We never take off and dive into the races of our dreams, opportunities and potential, simply because we are worried that we aren’t prepared enough, good enough and we don’t have all of the answers.

We begin telling ourselves the little lies that lead to big mental roadblocks. Our self-talk sounds like this: “There is no way we could start that business, pursue that degree, take that promotion, change that career or step into our dreams and destiny because we don’t know enough, aren’t good enough and we don’t have all of the answers.”

The best thing you can do is simply look at yourself in the mirror and repeat these words, “You Don’t Have All The Answers” and be okay with it. So What! You don’t have all of the answers, you will figure it out along the way. No successful person had all of the answers when they began down the road of success.

“Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far they can go.” ~T.S. Eliot

Nope you don’t have all the answers, but if you want to find out your true potential, you have to step out to find out.
