What Is Influence?

What is Influence? by definition Influence isA power affecting a person, thing, or course of events, especially one that operates without any direct or apparent effort. Over the years and especially in recent months, God has provided me with some awesome opportunities to wield influence for The Kingdom.

One of the things that I have had the opportunity to do over the last several months is to connect at a greater level with the Assemblies of God. In these few months I have been in meetings with the top leadership of this Fellowship and I’ve been impressed with what they are doing to resource not only those in the AG but also to the greater Evangelical world.

Over the next coupe of days I have the honor of Co-Hosting the Influence Conference at the General Council of the Assemblies of God in Phoenix along with my buddy Scott Wilson. This conference which is open to the public for only $10 is one example of the AG resourcing leaders. Over 4,500 people are pre-registered for the conference and the AG will be launching a new publishing imprint called Influence Resources. I’ve been able to look first-hand at most of the resources and I know many of the authors.  They are putting out quality content for the Church at-large.
Part of this new initiative to connect with and resource the church the AG has recently hired my good friend Justin Lathrop as the Director of Strategic Relations. Justin is a very strategic leader and an amazing go-to networking connector in the church world.   When I heard about his new role I thought it would be a great opportunity to interview Justin, especially when I’m asking the question, What Is Influence?

The principles that Justin has utilized in his ministry will be beneficial as we all continue to have greater Influence for the Kingdom. I have always appreciated the value that connectors naturally bring everyone else, as I consider myself a connector as well.

I Asked Justin These Few Questions Below:

ME: So how did you get started with this whole networking with people thing?
Justin: Honestly, I’ve loved learning and observing what people are doing in different places since I was in high school. I can remember visiting churches that met at different times than my home church back when I was 16 years old. I just loved the idea of seeing the unique things others were doing.
Me: Do you think the idea of networking is for everyone in ministry or just a certain sub-group of people with a particular personality type?
Justin: I truly believe that every person can benefit from building strong networks of others. Whether it be a lead pastor building a network within the local government for greater influence, a community on non-profits for greater impact or other ministries for greater ideas, networking can benefit everybody.
Me: What are some basic networking tips or networking advice that you can share… Networking 101 type stuff?
Justin: Here are three quick bits of advice I would give:
  • 1. Have a genuine love for people. Pastors, (for the most part) already have a huge love for people. A traditional view of networking is making connections for the future benefit of yourself. Kingdom networking comes out of a heart that wants to see others succeed.
  • 2. Develop a system for keeping up with people. A lot of people would say this makes relationship less natural. I would disagree. I have been able to develop so many strong friendships over the years due to me creating a system for connecting and following up on relationships.
  • 3. Be a problem solver. At the heart of a good networker is the ability to collaborate on other people’s problems like they were your own. I love discovering other people’s problems and helping connect them to solutions.
Me: I appreciate your time and I look forward to hanging at the influence Conference.
The Influence Conference has almost completely sold out (Understandably so, with speakers like Dino Rizzo, Lisa Bevere & others, coupled with worship from Shane & Shane. If you are in the Phoenix area and would like to attend the conference Monday (eve.) and Tuesday (morn.), leave a comment below and I’ll see if I can hook you up.
What Is Influence? You are influence…

5 Ways Twitter Can Bring Inspiration to Your 4th Of July

  • 1. Family– As you read all the tweets about 4th of July  family picnics, outings, events… it might be just the encouragement that you need to do something with your family.  If you are already hangin’ with your family or read tweets about people wishing they were with their family; those tweets will remind you to appreciate and value your family time.
  • 2. Food– Let’s be honest you are going to read more tweets about burgers, brats, hot-dogs, steaks, charcoal, baked-beans, polish sausage, hot-links, chicken… in the next 24 hours then you will in the next year.  If you’re a guy, your competitive spirit will have you whipping up your secret recipes and throwing something on the grill.  As a matter of fact, I’m willing to bet 50% of the Twitpics will be taken of some form of grilled meat.
  • 3. Fun- It doesn’t get much more fun than the 4th of July.  The kids love it, you love it, people sitting at home doing nothing but watching the festivities on television love it and the people in the TwitterWorld love it even more, because they get to share their 4th of July fun with all their Social Media friends.  These exuberant Tweets of fun might just inspire you to turn up your personal or family Fun-o-meter and do the Dougie, Jerk or Cha-Cha Slide right where you are.
  • 4. Fireworks- This is one of the key ingredients of this huge patriotic celebration, as the culmination is blowing stuff up or an awesome fireworks display.  People will find themselves doing one of three things when darkness strikes their neck of the woods: 1. Shooting Fireworks  2. Watching fireworks displays live  3. Watching fireworks displays on television.  No matter which of the three describes an individual’s situation, the end result will be Twitpics of fireworks filling up the Twitter streams.  Not only do you get to share Twitpics of your fireworks display, but you can follow and re-tweet your favorite friends and celebrities that you follow.  I mentioned in reason #3 that 50% of the Twitpics will be taken of some sort of grilled meat, the other 50% will be taken of fireworks displays.
  • 5. Freedom- As we celebrate the Declaration Of Independence, we must always remember that Freedom Is Never FREE.  Be sure to send a tweet thanking the men and women of The United States Armed Forces (Past & Present) who fight to protect our freedom.

What will your 4th of July Festivities look like?  Will you be Tweeting about them?

Top 10 Ways To Get Re-Tweeted

This post will get straight to the point… If you want to get Re-Tweeted, Implement These Top 10 Ways To Get Re-Tweeted Below:

  • 1. SPACE – Leave 18-20 characters available in your tweet… allows enough room for your name @ sign and RT.  This is the most common reason people will not RT your post, individuals don’t want to take the time and energy to remove characters and shorten your post. TIME IS MONEY!
  • 2. CONTENT – Tweet content that provides value to a broad audience — quotes, humor, questions, compelling thoughts, breaking news, technology, social media breakthroughs, tips, links to great content etc.  CONTENT IS KING!
  • 3.  CONSISTENCY – Make sure your tweets are consistent.  Think of your tweets in a similar fashion that you look at newspaper or magazine subscription.   Your followers will learn to trust and grow to expect a particular type of content in a consistently delivered manner.  CONSISTENCY COUNTS!
  • 4. TACTFUL – Have a keen sense of what to tweet and what not to tweet in order to maintain good relationships with your twitter community.  Don’t consistently ask your Twitter Community to Re-Tweet your tweet…  If you feel that the tweet or content is valuable, it may make sense to ask selective followers to RT a tweet.  If you ask all of your followers to RT your content all of the time, your message will fall on deaf ears. HAVE SOME MANNERS!
  • 5. RECIPROCATE – Give and receive value to the Twitter community. Re-tweet other’s tweets if you find their information valuable and be sure that you provide them the RT credit they deserve.   Don’t be a Re-Tweetaholic or once again your message will fall on deaf ears. SHARE THE LOVE!
  • 6. BRAND – Develop a consistent Twitter brand, presence, notoriety, content etc. desirable of being Re-Tweeted.  Many people have put the time energy and effort to earn the right for their content to be Re-Tweeted.  If you look at theTop 50 Re-tweeted Twitter Users Of All Time the one thing that’s consistent is that they all have their own unique brand. GET BRANDED!
  • 7. RECOGNITION – Get recognized or develop a relationship with the people on the Top 50 Re-Tweeted Twitter Users Of All Time. :)  Seriously you don’t have to develop a relationship with people on that list; however having your content re-tweeted by folks with a strong Twitter brand will help with future RT’s.  GET RECOGNIZED!
  • 8. LISTS – Believe it or not being on the right Twitter List can increase your ability to be re-tweeted.  People utilize their lists to keep the people they want to hear from front and center.  Lists can be as important on the Retweetometer as the number of followers.  Lists are a great measure of content value.  GET LISTED!
  • 9. REPEAT – Repeat #1.  This is by far the most important aspect of being re-tweeted and often times the most over-looked.  Leave at least 18 characters, if you can leave 36 that’s even better… you have potentially doubled your chances. SPACE IS KEY!
  • 10. BLOG ABOUT IT –  Write a simple blogpost about How To Get Re-Tweeted. 🙂  In all seriousness write about Twitter or Social Media – People in the wold of Social Media love to share content about Social Media. TOPIC MATTERS!

7 Ways To Avoid The Twitter Spam Scam

The wacky crazy world of Twitter brings the good, the bad and the ugly to the social media community.  The recent streams of Twitter DM Spam Scams are probably the ugliest of them all.  If you are unaware of what I’m talking about, I’m referring to the fact that  innocent individuals are getting their Twitter accounts hacked and computers being phished.

These hacks consist of random spam DM’s (direct messages) being sent to their followers with a link attached to it.  When individuals click on these links, their accounts can also be compromised creating a vicious cycle.  No one is exempt from these hacks, I know plenty of innocent, tech savvy and social media aficionado’s who’ve gotten hacked.   Below are a few sample of the recent spam DM’s (don’t click the links, because I just copied and pasted them from some DM’s have been sent to me, I repeat don’t click the links).  You didn’t really think that I was going to allow these links to be clickable did you?   Here are a few samples:

  • “I cant believe you posted this about me, i am so upset right now.”
  • “i got cheap medication online without a prescription…”
  • “thought you might like to see this ..”
  • someone is making really bad updates about you your twitter, user is”
  • “Earn extra money! I do, its easy, i searched and I found this really good site, very helpful, I make $6,950 per month”

As you can see one of the indicators of the current DM spam is the “” and they generally have some off base lower case punctuation.   Again, this is just a small sampling of the DM’s that have been floating around.   Some of the other spam type tweet include: a colon cleanse, iq test, male enhancement, is this you, Lol. this you?? and people making x-amount of $$$’s a day on-line. I have outlined 7 Ways To Avoid The Twitter Spam Scam below:

  • 1. Don’t open any DM links that seem remotely weird, that ask questions, starts with “hey,” or has links in general… especially links ending in .info or that have in them.
  • 2. Use common sense-  if you see xsgay. something in a link, it’s probably not a good link to click.  The most recent one is Lol. this you??  Lol this is funny. HaHa you look funny on here!  Or basically anything with laughter in it. somebody wrote something about you in this blog here yourself the question “Does my Twitter friend even talk like this tweet reads?”   Even if it’s not a DM, avoid any links that may look remotely questionable, even in @replies.
  • 3. Never log into anything with your Twitter account information unless it has a twitter oath login or logging in directly from or a trusted third party application.
  • 4. Change your password every couple of months and immediately after opening any of the above-mentioned links.
  • 5. Follow @spam  which is Twitter’s official spam account.  You can send them DM’s reporting spammers and spam problems that you’re having.  They are good about helping out.  You can also click the Twitter Help link and file a formal help ticket complaint.
  • 6. Let your friends know if their account has been hacked (unintentional spam) and block/report intentional spammers.

Have you been hacked?  Share any current DM OR PHISHING spam that you may be receiving. Hacked or not, share your thoughts, experiences and additional strategies to avoid the Twitter DM Spam Scam.

How Businesses Are #Winning With Social Media

Social media has well eclipsed the thought that it is just a fad; it is more like cotton – the fabric of our lives.  Social Media is not simply new media… it’s the media.  It’s the chosen form of media of the people.  If a business wants to be successful they have to be where the people are and the people are on social media.

It doesn’t matter if you’re in the business of selling trinkets, pancakes, books, gas, financial services, phones, hamburgers or cars… Your customers are on social media and that’s where you need to be.  Many of them are reading this post from their mobile device.  They want to hear from you, they want to find you and more importantly they want to share the good, bad and ugly about you with their tribe.  Social media has allowed ordinary Joe to have a mom and pop type connection with their favorite brands, products and businesses through Twitter and other forms of Social Media.

If a company is not on social media they are failing bigger than a pregnant Twitter Fail Whale and that’s BIG.  Businesses need to have a social media presence just for the sake of being able to know what people are saying about them and their products.  Like it or not people are talking about your business, they are talking the good stuff, bad stuff and ugly stuff.  Not only are they talking but their friends and followers are listening.

Research shows that 78% of consumers trust peer recommendations and only 14% trust advertisements.  For that reason, every business should have someone that understands social media (consultant or in-house) assigned and responsible for their social media presence.

I remember traveling to Florida this summer and had a layover at KCI, Kansas City International Airport.  If you have ever been to KCI you know that it is very tight (not cool, but small).  You have to leave outside of security to get food, other than a few little kiosk like stands.  While I was at KCI, I tweeted an honest but somewhat negative tweet, my tweet was this: “Kansas City might have some good BBQ, but they need to work on this airport captivity, can’t leave, must re-enter through security airport!” I also tweeted, “Kansas City airport is like a prison once you get through security…  You’re Locked Down.”

Shortly after my tweet went out, I received a twitter response from @kciairport that read as follows: @scottwilliams our design is not ideal for transiting pax. Working to increase avail concessions in gate areas.  Please enjoy our Free Wifi.” I loved the quick response and the fact that they directly addressed my concern as a customer.  It immediately changed my thoughts about the Kansas City International Airport.  I felt compelled to share my change of heart with my Social Media Tribe.  I tweeted this response, “Big #FistBump to @KCIAirport for having free wifi & a social media crew that responds to customers.  Awesome! Others should learn from this.”

The fact that the Kansas City International Airport had a viable social media presence saved their brand from a black eye and ended up adding value to their business.  If they didn’t have a great social media presence, those pregnant fail whale thoughts of mine would still be actively swimming around in the online waters of Twitter and Facebook.  Not to mention that 78% of my social media friends would agree with me and have similar thoughts.

Some Businesses Are #Winning With Social Media… While Others #Fail!

Do your favorite brands and businesses have a viable Social Media Presence?    Share your thoughts and experiences.

Twitter Is In The Bible

Every once and awhile you will run across a nugget of information that makes you go “hmm!” That’s what happened when I ran across these passages of scripture that confirm Twitter Is In The Bible:

  • Insomniac, I twitter away, mournful as a sparrow in the gutter.” Psalm 102:7 MSG
  • “Like a swallow, like a crane, so I twitter; I moan like a dove; My eyes look wistfully to the heights; O Lord, I am oppressed, be my security.” Isaiah 38:14 NAS

Check out the screenshots above from my YouVersion Bible App on my iPhone.

That’s what you call taking “Twitter” to a whole nutha’ level and confirms my 5 Reasons To Twitter During Church.

Did you know the word “Twitter” was in the Bible?   Have you seen Twitter anywhere else in the Bible?   Feel free to share any random useful/non-useful information that you may have come across.

5 Ways To Be Recognized as A Social Media Influencer

Can You Recognize A Social Media Influencer, When You See Them? Well the obvious answer is yes, absolutely you can.  Think of some of your favorite Social Media Influencers, why you choose to follow them and how they influence you personally.  Although many of the effective principles are paralleled, leading and influencing in the world of social media can sometimes be more difficult than leading/influencing in a traditional leadership/work settings.

The social media influencer has to lead purely through relational, cause and content equity.  There is no positional equity, hierarchical leadership or formal boss.  The social media influencer has to answer this daily question for their followers: “Why should I listen to, or follow you?”  In other words, what are you providing that makes people want to follow you; especially when there are thousands of others who are only a click away.

Social Media Influence is not simply about the numbers but rather about value. @Oprah has nearly 6 million followers on Twitter, however she wasn’t a social media influencer until recent months.  She didn’t start actively tweeting until @MCHammer showed her the value and potential of Twitter when he appeared on her show.  He showed her how to extend and leverage her influence to the world of social media.  MC Hammer is a big-time social media influencer and even owns several companies that deal with aspects of social media. @Oprah definitely had potential, but so does every single person in the world of Social Media. Remember This — Potential unrealized is just potential. MC Hammer helped Oprah to reach her potential.

On the other hand @revrunwisdom is probably one of the most influential individuals on Twitter.  If he’s not the most influential, he’s definitely at the top of any list.  He is the most re-tweeted Twitter user of all-time. Why is Rev Run so influential?  It’s quite simple, he provides daily value to every single person in his twitter stream.  He has found his unique voice, which happens to be sharing consistent daily morsels of wisdom.  This is an extension of what he did for years prior to joining Twitter at the end of his TV Show Run’s House.  He would close out his show with a quote typed onto his blackberry and end with a “God Is Love… ~Rev Run.”

Actress @Alyssa_Milano is a social media influencer, not because she is an actress but rather because she adds tons of value by sharing relevant content, promoting causes, sharing her life and being herself.  Pastor @shaunking is a social media influencer, he started an organization that leverages social media for social good for those in need around the globe.  The list of influencers goes on and on…

5 Ways To Be Recognized as A Social Media Influencer:

  • 1.) Can You See What I’m Saying? Find your voice.  Your online voice should be a natural overflow of your IRL (In Real Life) voice.  They should not be mutually exclusive, but rather one in the same.
  • 2.) When You Look At Me Who Do You See? Don’t try to be a copycat or phony.  Authenticity is crucial, so Keep it Real!  “Do You! It’s A Statement… Not A Question.”
  • 3.) Can I See You? Be accessible, helpful, respond to tweets, write a guest post for someone, remember that your online influence is based upon those who choose to follow or connect with you.  Key word… choose, social media is all about choices. @RevRunWisdom is a rare breed when it comes to interaction and following, he doesn’t follow anyone.  Accessibility is important, but not paramount See #2. (Be yourself.)
  • 4.) Can You See My Muscles? Be willing to flex your Social Media muscle by tackling the tough issues, helping worthy causes and adding overall value to the online community.
  • 5.) Can You See Me? People can’t follow you if you don’t give them anything to follow.  Just like the newspaper, you need to deliver regular content.  You don’t have to be hyperactive, just active.  Write something, tweet something, share something!  @oprah‘s nearly 6 million followers had probably forgotten that she even existed before she started actively tweeting.  I mean forgot about her only from a Social Media perspective.  Her worldwide and new television influence will continue to be exponentially multiplied with her engagement of her social media community.

Ellen DeGeneres or @theellenshow does a great job at all of the above.

Who influences you in the world of Social Media and why?  Share your thoughts or other ways to be recognized as a social media influencer.
