Periscope is new, Periscope is fresh and Periscope is the next big thing when it comes to social media, connectivity and making the world just a little bit smaller. I’m a daily broadcaster on Periscope and you can find me @ScottWilliams or search “Scott Williams” and I’ll be the 1st one to show up. I have broadcasted over 400 times and received nearly 4,000, 000 hearts and have been using Periscope since a couple days after it launched.

During my time on Periscope I’ve concluded that there are 4 Easy Ways To ROCK Periscope:

  1. Be Real – Be yourself, don’t try to copy anyone else, mimic other broadcasters or broadcast some fake version of the real you. People can see right through bogus broadcasters in the Periscope world and they prefer connecting to real, authentic, what you see is what you get type of people.
  2. Be Often – You should broadcast consistently. I would recommend at-least once daily as the broadcasts remain available for replay for only 24 hours. Additionally, as people search your profile and find that you have not broadcasted in the last 24 hours it will show “no recent broadcasts.” “No recent broadcasts” may limit viewers desire to come back to view your future broadcasts. If you can’t do daily broadcasts, find some regular rhythm.
  3. Be Calculated – There should be some thought into the what, why, when and where of your broadcasts. I’m not recommending that you have notes and a robust plan, I’m simply saying there should be a method to your Periscope Madness.
  4. Be Kind – This is similar to the Golden Rule, “One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself.” It’s simple don’t troll, don’t post rude comments, don’t be disrespectful, don’t ask female broadcasters to show you their boobs, don’t be argumentative… simply be kind. If you don’t like what’s going on in a broadcast leave the broadcast, on the other hand if you are a broadcaster be kind to your viewers.

What Used To Work… Is No Longer Working! http://www.bigisthenewsmall.com/2015/01/05/what-used-to-work-is-no-longer-working-2/ http://www.bigisthenewsmall.com/2015/01/05/what-used-to-work-is-no-longer-working-2/#comments Mon, 05 Jan 2015 13:51:30 +0000 http://www.bigisthenewsmall.com/?p=11987 new approach

For those of you that know me, you know that I travel a lot, like a whole lot. With traveling comes a lot of learning and people watching. One thing that I have noticed is that every time I’m in an airport there is a little booth where people are trying to get you to sign up for some credit card associated with frequent flyer miles of some sort. We’ve all seen them, as people walk by they start yelling, “Hey sir or ma’am get your card, earn some miles, get a free flight…”

The problem with their “talking & yelling” approach is that no one is listening, people continue to walk by and avoid the booth says would you like to sign up for the flu or something worse. Dave Ramsey is probably delighted to see everyone walk swiftly past the airline credit card people.

I personally think they need to STOP Talking… Nobody Is Listening. They need to try a new approach. What used to work, is no longer working.

That’s the story of life, leadership, relationships, parenting, marketing, ministry and a new year.  Sometimes we need to STOP Talking, Nobody is listening. Try a new approach: “What Used To Work… Is No Longer Working!”

Cheers To An Awesome New Year.

Why Leaders and Organizations Need To Stop Burying Their High Capacity Talent http://www.bigisthenewsmall.com/2014/11/11/why-leaders-and-organizations-need-to-stop-burying-their-high-capacity-talent/ Tue, 11 Nov 2014 16:23:54 +0000 http://www.bigisthenewsmall.com/?p=11936 talentMost organizations and leaders would love to have “High Capacity” leaders to fill the slots within their organizations. The sometimes overlooked challenge is the fact that with “High Capacity” leaders, comes the need for those leaders to lead at uhh… a “High Capacity” in addition to releasing their creativity.

This will sometimes leave organizations scratching their head and asking the question what do I do with so and so?  They are knocking it out of the park, they have an entrepreneurial spirit, their potential is off the charts and they actually have the leadership margin to spread their wings.

Spreading their wings means different things for different leaders, but it boils down to how can I steward their talent/potential and continue to allow them to make a positive impact within the organization. Many times organizations make the decision to do one of two things: 1. Bury that talent and therefore putting a lid on the height of that “High Capacity Leader.” 2. Get rid of that team member because of insecurity or simply not wanting to deal with the challenges these types of leaders bring to the table.

It’s like the Parable of the talents: The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more.  The one with the two talents gained two more.  But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.

So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’
“His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed?Matthew 25:25-26

If your organization, team, staff or business has been blessed with some great talent, Don’t Bury It!  There is a new type of harvest to be sown with this “High Capacity” seed.

If you figure out a way to maximize the potential of the “High Capacity” talent that you have been blessed with, you will be rewarded.  This may require you getting creative, dreaming BIG, thinking BIGGER and setting some clear expectations; however the potential of the harvest is immeasurable.

Take a look at Google, not only are they ranked the #1 Website, they have also been ranked as fortune magazine’s best place to work.  Not only is their work environment ridiculously amazing, they do a great job of not burying their talent.  They not only do they recruit and hire “High Capacity” talent, they seek ways to release and empower the creativity.

An example of releasing “High Capacity” talent and creativity, is Google allows employees to spend twenty percent of their time to work on their own project, independent of their workgroup. Google believes that no one should leave in order to pursue their personal passions. Letting employees do this results in over twenty percent of Google’s new product launches has stemmed from these personal projects.  There can and should be a marriage between “High Capacity” talent and great organizations; they are not mutually exclusive.

If organizations manage their talent wisely, they may get this response: ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’Matthew 25:25

Don’t Bury Your “High Capacity” Talent!

Greatness Is Always A Matter Of Choice http://www.bigisthenewsmall.com/2014/10/27/greatness-is-always-a-matter-of-choice/ http://www.bigisthenewsmall.com/2014/10/27/greatness-is-always-a-matter-of-choice/#comments Mon, 27 Oct 2014 12:58:51 +0000 http://www.bigisthenewsmall.com/?p=11929 greatWe live in a world where there is greatness all around us. We get to watch our favorite TV programs with all of the great actors and actresses. Right now we are in the middle of the MLB World Series where we get to watch the greatest baseball players in the world battle it out on the field. We get to attend conferences and hear from some of brightest minds and the greatest speakers of our time.

We simply get to sit and watch greatness. We get to imagine what greatness could be and get a little glimpse of what it is. We get to watch greatness all around us and often times we are in awe because of it.

I was watching a little singing competition called American Idol where people who watched greatness for years decided to take a shot at becoming great. Twelve made it to the top, two made it to the finale and there was one great winner. What changed with these top 12? They chose to be great, they gave it a chance, they stepped in the ring, they got off the sidelines and they got in the game.

“Greatness is inside of you” is not some random quote or saying… it’s truth. You have potential for greatness, it’s time that you reach your God potential.

“Forget about likes and dislikes. They are of no consequence. Just do what must be done. This may not be happiness but it is greatness.” ~George Bernard Shaw

Greatness is never a matter of chance, Greatness is always a matter of choice.

Are You Choosing Excellence? http://www.bigisthenewsmall.com/2014/09/22/are-you-choosing-excellence/ http://www.bigisthenewsmall.com/2014/09/22/are-you-choosing-excellence/#comments Mon, 22 Sep 2014 12:53:42 +0000 http://www.bigisthenewsmall.com/?p=11893 excellence1Excellence – (noun) [ek-suh-luhns] The fact or state of excelling.

Often times Excellence is viewed as this moving, high-level target that only a select group of fortuitous individuals can achieve. Excellence is simply a choice, it’s choice to: study more, practice longer, take that extra step in customer service, spend the necessary time with your children, making sure the restroom in your place of business is spic and span, to say “My Pleasure” instead of saying “Pull around to the second window…”

Excellence is a choice to care more than most think you should, risk more than most are willing to risk, dream bigger than most will ever dream and think more than others are willing to think. Excellence is not about being perfect, it’s about putting the best foot forward every step of the way.

Are You Choosing Excellence?

Why Apple Has The Best Business Strategy On The Planet – iPhone 6 http://www.bigisthenewsmall.com/2014/09/17/why-apple-has-the-best-business-strategy-on-the-planet-iphone-6/ http://www.bigisthenewsmall.com/2014/09/17/why-apple-has-the-best-business-strategy-on-the-planet-iphone-6/#comments Wed, 17 Sep 2014 13:00:42 +0000 http://www.bigisthenewsmall.com/?p=11888 Apple Introduces iPhone 5Let me start off by confessing that I’m an Apple fan, I’m part of the Apple tribe, I love what Apple does and how they do it. With that being said I always have some interesting debates with my Android and “Other Device” friends. It always ends with them talking about their improvements, their advancements, their sexy product commercials and how Apple is behind the times. My response is generally something like, “So what, your product really doesn’t matter and no one really cares.”

Don’t get me wrong as an Apple fan, at times I find myself intrigued by the other products. In my home I’ve even had my 11 and 15 year old sons see a Samsung commercial and say that they would like to have one. My response is always simple, “We do Apple in the Williams home… just wait, Apple will have something great.” Fortunately, dad has always been right.

That leads me to the point of this post and Why Apple Has The Best Business Strategy On The Planet. Apple does a great job of creating fans, a tribe, a group of loyalist that trusts their brand. When you trust a brand you don’t get caught up in what other brands are doing. You may look out of the corner of your eye and pay attention; however you never get caught up.

Case in point, I remember people being intrigued, excited and in awe of the LeBron James commercial and the Samsung watch and Big Screen Phone and yada yada yada. Since the launch those folks have been as quiet as a church mouse. Honestly, there has been way more talk about LeBron James taking his talents to Cleveland while everyone has forgotten about Samsung’s watch or big screen phone, because although they were first and new… they just didn’t matter.

Apple’s business strategy is about creating a tribe, a group that feels like they have something in common because they have the same device, the same iPad, the same computer and the same iPhone. More importantly they deliver time and time and time again.

Apple has done it again, they have delivered and both of my sons and millions upon millions of others are happy. As a matter of fact, more than 4 million pre-orders for the new iPhones were placed when they went on sale for pre-order this past Friday. Have you ever heard of anyone pre-ordering an Android device? let me answer that question for you… No you have not. The “Other” products business strategies are being 1st and not best. Tribes wait on the best, just ask the long lines at the best restaurants around the world. The discussion sounds something like, “We had to wait in line for a bit, but oh was it worth it.”

Another thing that was worth waiting for, was waiting for Tim Cook to step out of the shadows of Steve Jobs and take his place as Apple’s leader. Every leader has that moment where they seem to find their voice and their place, Tim Cook seems to have finally found that.

As a consumer, a loyalist, a member of the Apple tribe, and someone who is a strategist by trade, I look at Apple’s business strategy as the best on the planet. Their products, brand, look, feel and delivery methods simply work. Not only will Apple be delivering happiness to their fans with the iPhone 6’s this and Apple Pay this week, they created months of intrigue for the iWatch to be released in 2015.

These strategies work by simply keeping the tribe happy and they work at putting money in the bank. You can’t argue with any of Apple’s decisions and results. The minor inconveniences of waiting has customers ending with the same response of the awesome restaurant connoisseurs, “We had to wait in line for a bit, but oh was it worth it.”

Apple is seriously brilliant at waiting things out, letting competition exhaust money on incremental changes, creating desire, creating intrigue, learning from others, hiring the best people, creating questions and then delivering a stellar product that changes the game. Honestly I think Apple sums it up best in the video intro to their Keynote address from last week. This video didn’t have any audio; however the visuals and words on the screen spoke 1000 words. It read as follows:

“Here’s to those who have always seen things differently the ones who follow a vision and not a path

Where others perceive first as valuable, you value the first thing that actually matters. While others are distracted by the new, you focus on the significance as a whole new take.

Even before you could see how, you never doubted that we would change things and them we did together… Again and again and again and again.

Relentless optimism is what moves the world forward, so keep seeing things differently. Keep trusting there is always another way, a better way, a bigger way. One that breaks down barriers and heals the landscape.

You are the difference between the world as it was and the better place it will become and different is the one thing about us that will always be the same.”

This Is How You Become Good At Anything http://www.bigisthenewsmall.com/2014/09/01/this-is-how-you-become-good-at-anything/ http://www.bigisthenewsmall.com/2014/09/01/this-is-how-you-become-good-at-anything/#comments Mon, 01 Sep 2014 17:30:28 +0000 http://www.bigisthenewsmall.com/?p=11873 goodThe way that you become good at anything is to do it over and over on a consistent basis. In other words you make it a habit. Great writers form a daily habit of writing, they write something on a consistent basis. It becomes a habit and over time they become good at it. The same thing is true for thinkers, networkers, speakers, leaders, gardeners, chefs, parents, married couples etc. If you want to become good at something, get in the habit of working on that thing on a daily basis.

If you want to become great at something, work on it daily until you love it.

“Greatness always comes from the overflow of a genuine love.”

10 Reasons Why You Should Be Doing The Work That You Love http://www.bigisthenewsmall.com/2014/08/25/10-reasons-why-you-should-be-doing-the-work-that-you-love/ http://www.bigisthenewsmall.com/2014/08/25/10-reasons-why-you-should-be-doing-the-work-that-you-love/#comments Mon, 25 Aug 2014 13:22:31 +0000 http://www.bigisthenewsmall.com/?p=11865 do loveIt’s been said that if you do the work that you love that you will never work another day in your life. Well, that’s kind of sort of true. I love what I do; however i is work, it’s hard work. It’s a paradoxical tension that I’ve learned to appreciate. I love spending time with family, sharing the Gospel, strategizing, connecting, thinking, dreaming, leading, challenging and helping others win. Fortunately, that’s what I do every day.

I love what I do and you should to. The reason so many people are not able to do the work that they love is because they are fearful of what would happen if they took that step of faith.

“STOP worrying about what would happen if you made those tough decisions and took the big risks. START worrying about the haunting regret you will experience if you never make the tough decisions, take the big risks and your life remains the same.”

10 Reasons You Should Be Doing The Work That You Love

  • 1. It’s what you love… duh.
  • 2. Life is too short to be wasting time doing work that you don’t even like.
  • 3. If you are sharp enough to rise to a leadership role for an organization you are not particularly fond of, you’re definitely sharp enough to successfully do something you love.
  • 4. It’s easier to wake up in the morning, when you’re waking up to do what you love.
  • 5. You are consistently motivated by an inner desire to do what you love and the success of it all is simply a nice bonus.
  • 6. Your dreams can be centered around what you love instead of dreaming about how to get out of a situation that you don’t like.
  • 7. You only live once on this earth. ((repeat))
  • 8. If you find yourself in what you perceive as mediocre work situation – you don’t have much to loose, pursue the work you love.
  • 9. If you don’t feel that you can leave the financial security, ask yourself “Will the money be the most important piece of my life puzzle 5-10-15 years from now?” Better yet talk to someone in the “Car Business” that chased the dollar their entire life.
  • 10. There is a reason something you love is burning deep down inside of you – it’s because it’s what you were created to do.

There are some great lyrics and encouragement for those contemplating, desiring or thinking about pursuing the work they love found in hip hop artist Emimen’s song “Lose Yourself.”

“Lose Yourself”

If you had one shot, one opportunity
To seize everything you ever wanted in one moment
Would you capture it or just let it slip?

You can do anything you set your mind to. ~Eminem

Maybe it’s time that you “Lose Yourself” or better yet, it’s time that you find yourself, it’s time that you do what you love and love what you do.

Warning – Your Leadership May Be In A Blind Spot http://www.bigisthenewsmall.com/2014/07/28/warning-your-leadership-may-be-in-a-blind-spot/ Mon, 28 Jul 2014 10:23:32 +0000 http://www.bigisthenewsmall.com/?p=11839 blind spotEveryone loves following a great leader; you love how they think, how they lead and more importantly how they make you feel. Although we all love following those great leaders, it’s important to understand that even the greatest of leaders have blind spots. These blind spots show up as a result of focussing on the “What” of leadership and overlooking the “How” and “Why.” Often times leaders and organizations make a habit of looking forward towards their goals, while rarely look in their rearview mirror or side mirrors to see whats coming, what’s happening around them, how people are feeling and what rough terrain is ahead. The entire organization will follow this same pattern of overlooking blind spots unless the leaders truly encourage otherwise.

By encouraging otherwise, I mean encouraging and embracing the challenging of the organization’s direction, decisions, culture, things that just aren’t quite right and pointing out the blind spots. More often than not leaders become comfortable as it relates to what they can challenge, what they can say, what’s sacred and what would be considered obvious blind spots become “things we don’t do, things our boss won’t allow or things that simply won’t change”

Leaders should encourage new hires to actively point out blind spots during their 1st 90 days of employment. Those fresh eyes and fresh perspectives are invaluable to an organization. Organizations should consider changing up the executive leadership team from time to time. This one is tricky, because there is tremendous value in having a consistent leadership team; however there is also tremendous value in someone new at the leadership table that is more willing to point out the blind spots, break what’s become normal, bring a fresh new outlook and challenge the status quo.

Another great way that organizations can begin to see their blind spots is by bringing in a reputable 3rd party consultant or strategist, whose only agenda is to be objective and help the organization reach their desired goals. Lastly, have a blind spot meeting – a meeting where you invite some of the brightest, most critical, outspoken, futuristic, company Kool-aid drinking and play it safe people all in the same room to do nothing more than point out blind spots. (This is fun)

When organizations make it a point to actively point out blind spots the organization will not only drive with the mindset of looking ahead, and periodically looking in the rearview mirror. The organization can tap into the use of the various side mirrors and overhead perspectives to help them see their blind spots. This is not a magic potion type of fix, it’s a process that takes time, focus and commitment to driving with greater leadership clarity.

Blind spots: Every organization has them, only few are willing to point them out.
