12 Ways To Increase Your Leadership Capacity

Don’t you just love the lists of how to do this and how to do that.  I have been saying for the last few years that those lists would become a thing of the past; however they remain popular.

The driving force behind our interest in these types of lists is an inner desire to grow and quick bites of information that will help us get there.  We want to do things different, we want to think different and we want to be different, as long as the end result means growth.  Growth is a critical component of the vehicle that drives you down the road of success.

Below is a straight to the point list of 12 Ways To Increase Your Leadership Capacity

12 Ways To Increase Your Leadership Capacity

  • 1. Truly Embrace The Team Concept: There is no “I” in team and teamwork makes the dream work.
  • 2. Don’t Play It Safe: Be willing to take some risks.  Your risks can be calculated or not, either way you need to get off the shores of playing it safe.
  • 3. Give Credit & Take Blame:  Give credit where credit is due and be willing to look in the mirror and say, “My Bad” or “It’s My Fault!”
  • 4. Don’t Be A Yes Man or Yes Woman:  Be willing to step up and challenge things when they need to be challenged.  This can be the process of leading-up or leading-down.
  • 5. Don’t Lose Your Cool:  Remember the 3C’s in all situations – Cool, Calm & Collected.
  • 6. Empower Your Team:  Release your team to do their job.  Don’t be a micro-manager.
  • 7. Minimize Meetings:  Reduce the number of meetings, the length of meetings, the necessity of meetings and the list of who needs to attend the meetings.
  • 8. Get To Know Your Team Members On A Personal Level:  Know what’s going on in the lives of your team members outside of work.  Know their interests, their children’s interests… To know is to care.
  • 9. Take Time To Develop Your Team Members: Leadership development isn’t a system but rather an on-going act of moving people from where they are to where they need to be. If you want your overall leadership capacity to increase, you must increase the capacity of those around you.  Leadership development isn’t optional, it’s a necessity.
  • 10. Surround Yourself With The Best: Be willing to hire people that may be smarter, sharper, more opinionated and maybe even all around better leaders than you are. Empower and release those people to strengthen your team and compliment your leadership.
  • 11. Shh Listen For A Change:  Don’t be the person who is always talking – Shh, Be Quiet and Listen for a change.
  • 12. Ask The Difficult Questions:  This is where candid evaluation/assessment of everything will make the leader and the team better.  Ask questions like:  Are the individuals that I have on my team making me better?  Am I a my way or the highway leader?  Are we going in the right direction?  Who on my team got us here, but won’t get us there?  Am I making those around me better personally and professionally?  Am I open to receive candid feedback?  If my position, role, title or formal authority was removed would those around me still be willing to follow?  The list of questions goes on and on.  Ask the tough questions and embrace the tough answers.

If You Want To Be Great… You Must Do This!

In this fast-paced “Go, Go, Go” “Perform, Perform, Perform” “Succeed, Succeed, Succeed” and “Win, Win, Win” world that we live in, we can often overlook the importance of resting. Although I try to schedule time for rest, I preach about resting, I coach those that I mentor to rest, I can sometimes keep pressing on without resting.

Not taking the time to rest and recuperate is inexcusable. Rest is not simply important, it’s necessary to survive and it’s paramount for greatness to occur. All of the greats take time to rest. Jesus took time to rest. Michael Jordan took time to rest and drink Gatorade.

If You Want To Be Great, You Must Rest… period the end.

If You Want Your Staff To Be Great, You Must Provide An Environment Where They Can Rest and encourage them to rest.

Every human and non-human must rest; even race cars need a pit stop, computers need a rest and reboot and you need to rest. We come into this world as babies knowing how to rest and we leave this world with slowing, degenerating bodies that are forced to rest. It’s the years in between that we must learn to rest.

If you desire to be great, one of the most urgent things you will put on your schedule is a time for rest. If you desire to be great one of the most essential acts you will consistently complete is taking time to rest.

Many people talk about greatness, but few talk about rest; unfortunately the two are not mutually exclusive. Rest and greatness go hand in hand.

Why is it so hard for people to rest? Have we become so performance driven that rest is seen as a weakness? Share your thoughts.

Fake – [feyk] verb, faked, fak·ing, noun, adjective

Fake Definition – Prepare or make (something specious, deceptive, or fraudulent). To conceal the defects of or make appear more attractive, interesting, valuable, etc., usually in order to deceive. Not genuine, counterfeit, bogus… a sham.

Fake Leader–  A leader who attempts to be someone they’re not instead of simply being themselves. This leader will always have a difficult time succeeding and at some point their faking will simply catch up to them. This leader tends to have a different face, different persona, different tone and different everything when certain people are around. In other-words when the big boss comes around the fake leader puts their fake-face on. This fake-face is different than making minor adjustments when “company” comes around. This super-fake-face comes from a place of insecurity and an unwillingness to keep it real.

The Bottom Line: Fake Leaders Fail

5 Ways Twitter Brings Inspiration To Your 4th Of July

  • 1. Family– As you read all the tweets about 4th of July  family picnics, outings, events… it might be just the encouragement that you need to do something with your family.  If you are already hangin’ with your family or read tweets about people wishing they were with their family; those tweets will remind you to appreciate and value your family time.
  • 2. Food– Let’s be honest you are going to read more tweets about burgers, brats, hot-dogs, steaks, charcoal, baked-beans, polish sausage, hot-links, chicken… in the next 24 hours then you will in the next year.  If you’re a guy, your competitive spirit will have you whipping up your secret recipes and throwing something on the grill.  As a matter of fact, I’m willing to bet 50% of the Twitpics and Instagram shots will be taken of some form of grilled meat.
  • 3. Fun- It doesn’t get much more fun than the 4th of July.  The kids love it, you love it, people sitting at home doing nothing but watching the festivities on television love it and the people in the TwitterWorld love it even more, because they get to share their 4th of July fun with all their Social Media friends.  These exuberant Tweets of fun might just inspire you to turn up your personal or family Fun-o-meter and do the Dougie, Jerk, 2-Step, Stanky Legg, Electric Slide or Cha-Cha Slide right where you are.
  • 4. Fireworks- This is one of the key ingredients of this huge patriotic celebration, as the culmination is blowing stuff up or an awesome fireworks display.  People will find themselves doing one of three things when darkness strikes their neck of the woods: 1. Shooting Fireworks  2. Watching fireworks displays live  3. Watching fireworks displays on television.  No matter which of the three describes an individual’s situation, the end result will be Twitpics of fireworks filling up the Twitter streams.  Not only do you get to share Twitpics of your fireworks display, but you can follow and re-tweet your favorite friends and celebrities that you follow.  I mentioned in reason #3 that 50% of the Twitpics and Instagram shots will be taken of some sort of grilled meat, the other 50% will be taken of fireworks displays.
  • 5. Freedom- As we celebrate the Declaration Of Independence, we must always remember that Freedom Is Never FREE.  Be sure to send a tweet thanking the men and women of The United States Armed Forces (Past & Present) who fight to protect our freedom.

What will your 4th of July Festivities look like?  Will twitter find it’s way into your 4th of July?

You Must Have Someone You Can Be Honest With

There are too many stories of people who are dying, feeling beat up, questioning themselves, on the verge and feeling totally incapable. These disillusionment’s turn into poor decisions, bouts of depression and lots of second-guessing. The even more challenging component of these scenarios is the fact that most of these people don’t have anyone they can be totally honest with. They don’t have anyone they can tell how they are truly feeling and what they are really struggling with.

You Must Have Someone You Can Be Honest With and more importantly that person must have “permission to” and be “willing to” be totally honest with you. If you’re the person that’s been given permission to speak freely into someone else’s life, don’t wait until they have a train wreck and say, “I saw that coming.” Tell them beforehand; let them know what you see coming, what’s on the horizon and point out thinking errors they may be overlooking.

Surround yourself with people who will shoot you straight otherwise you may end up crooked.

20 Things God Says About You

Often times people go through life seeking affirmation from people and things. These places of affirmation leave people searching, empty and lost. For those that put their faith and trust in Jesus, their source of affirmation is from a different place. They are a new creation with a fresh perspective of how they view themselves, what they say about themselves and more importantly a different understanding of what God says about them.

God says many things about who you are and who you will become. I hope this list of 20 truths God says about you can serve as a reminder and a source of encouragement.

God believes in you… it’s time to start believing in yourself.

The Freedom To Be Authentic

The longer I live and the more people I meet, talk to, work with, counsel, mentor and simply listen to; the more I realize people struggle and fight for authenticity. People have a deep desire to be “who they truly are” but find themselves caught up like a hamster trapped in the wheel of mimicry.

No matter the person or the level of success they have achieved, the overarching reason they feel trapped and unable to be authentic is due to fear. Fear of what people think. Fear of being chastised. Fear of being wrong. Fear of making a mistake. Fear that the authentic individual deep down inside of them might be a little more daring, caring and sharing.

The crazy thing is that God didn’t give you the spirit of fear; however He did give you an authentic spirit, an authentic you. Drop the fear, let go of the fake and pick up the authentic. Authenticity will bring about challenges, critics and mistakes… Be authentic anyway.

“The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.” – C. Jung

You were brought into this world as an original, please don’t leave it as a phony. You are now free to move about the cabin of life… You Have The Freedom To Be Authentic.

Why do you think it is so difficult for people to be authentic?
