Don’t Shortcut The Process

processSometimes people try to shortcut the process. You may be thinking, What’s the process? Well the process is different depending on the situation. The process for a leader may be learning, putting in hard work, failing and paying your dues.

When you read phrases like “paying your dues” it may cause you to think the process must always be a ling and drawn out deal. Please don’t confuse the process for a particular amount of time, as the process varies from situation to situation.

There are some very young and capable King David type of leaders who God has provided what may be perceived as a shortcut to their advancement and promotion process. If you only see the shortcut of David becoming a young King then you will miss the hard work, faithfulness, leadership and life experience that came from shepherding sheep. Not to mention the faith to face giants that came along with that shepherd boy process.

Whatever your situation is, respect the process.

If you had a setback, a moral failure, a grave mishap that you brought on yourself…. respect the rehabilitation and restoration process. Don’t Shortcut The Process.

If you are trying to regain the trust of someone whose trust you lost, be patient and Don’t Shortcut The Process.

If you are wanting that promotion and you’ve only been on your current job for 2 weeks, Don’t Shortcut The Process.

When you see other people advancing, growing and being promoted and getting opportunities around you and you don’t understand why — It’s wise to self-evaluate, but Don’t Shortcut The Process.

Please understand that 80% of the process is what you think and perceive and 20% is how you act and respond. (re-read that sentence)

When looking at the journey of success there is a fine line and awesome tension between “Don’t Shortcut The Process and Make It Happen Now.” Embrace that tension and Don’t Shortcut The Process.

What Leaders and Organizations Can Learn From The Fall Of Blackberry and The Rise Of Apple

I have a friend who is somewhat of a BlackBerry fan. In his BlackBerry fandom he forwarded me the above tweet yesterday from the WallStreet Journal. Let me paraphrase what it says, “5 years ago BlackBerry accounted for half of the U.S. smartphones and today they account for none.”

I remember owning many different models of the BlackBerry with the old school track mouse roller ball thing. BlackBerry held onto the roller ball and the expensive data plans because they had an exclusive business crowd that wasn’t going to leave them no matter what. Well the iPhone had something to say about that and eventually the business folks left and BlackBerry is bankrupt, extinct and has some some really smart people in a room trying to come up with a BlackBerry rebound/comeback strategy.

I’m an Apple fan and although it’s hard for me to say, but if the Post Steve Jobs Apple company doesn’t adjust rapidly, they will find themselves in the same situation. I know the Apple fans are probably saying “no-way,” well that’s what my BlackBerry buddy who sent me the above tweet said to me about 5 years ago.

Here is the takeaway for organizations and leaders: Change, grow, adjust, stay hungry, surround yourself with the best, find fresh eyes, realize that you are not invincible, understand that success overshadows weaknesses, reinvent yourself when necessary and never ever ever take your customers and success for granted and stay ahead of the curve (BlackBerry Pun Intended).

PS: I guess the same thing can be said about your family and marriage… Never take either of them for granted.

How To Effectively Handle Criticism

Criticism is a one of those words that seems to cut most people like a knife.  Although the knife doesn’t seem as sharp when we put the word “constructive” in front of the word criticism; none-the-less the word still seems to pierce.

When I was growing up my mom would always tell me: “Son, you can’t control or worry about what people say… you can only control what you say and what you do.” Later on in life, as a young leader I had a mentor that would always say “If you’re doing something worthy of people taking shots at you… they will. I would much rather have a leader that people don’t always understand and who are occasionally criticized, than a “leader” that no one ever talks about.”  I’ve heard one of my old pastors say something like, “If you want to find the leader, look for the one with the arrow in their back!”

I tend to view criticism as neutral. As a matter of fact I view it from the perspective of the phrase that no one likes to say or hear and that is this: “It Is What It Is!” I prefer to “Eat The Meat and Spit Out The Bones!” When you are chewing on the meat of life, you might find some pieces that are not cooked to you’re liking, tough, salty and that simply don’t taste right. Although they are not cooked to your liking, it may be beneficial to go ahead and consume them. It’s called life lessons and learning experiences. Again, “Eat The Meat and Spit Out The Bones!”

If you don’t want to be criticized, I have some advice for you: Say Nothing, Do Nothing & Be Nothing!

It is not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled, or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes short again and again, who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, and spends himself in a worthy cause, who at best knows achievement and who at the worst if he fails at least fails while daring greatly so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.” ~Theodore Roosevelt

I don’t ever want to find my place with those “Cold and Timid Souls.”

By far the best acceptance speech in the history of the MVP Award. Kevin Durant started by thanking God, he displayed humility, he never focused on himself, he gave personal credit to every single team member and coach, he reflected on the past, he talked about hard work and sacrifice, he shared stories, he made a special note to talk about Westbrook, he gave his mother the credit due and he ended with thanking God last. God is Alpha and Omega.

As a proud member of the Oklahoma City community and Oklahoma City family, I’m glad Kevin Durant is a part of our framily plan. Seriously this guy is a great example and as he stated, “He uses basketball as a platform to inspire others.”

This video is a must watch for anyone that leads, has children, has a desire to succeed or if you just need to cry some tears of joy.

blindInsecure leaders have a hard time seeing the best in other because their eyes are covered by their own insecurities. Insecure leaders have difficulty seeing the value of taking responsibility and ownership for failures because their eyes are covered by their own insecurities. Insecure leaders will never see or realize their own potential because they are blinded by their own insecurities.

Leading On Empty

emptyIt’s a risky proposition to continue to drive your vehicle with the fuel light on and the gas hand on empty. I know “On Empty” is probably not the best word choice for the grammar teachers; however it is a phrase that I think you understand. You can run on empty for a little while, but eventually the car is going to stop. This is also very true for leaders.

Leaders can’t continue to run if they don’t rest, relax, take time off, allow others to pour into them, learn from others, free their mind and refuel. I know this sounds like a novel concept, unfortunately many leaders don’t time to rest and even worse they don’t allow their staff the opportunities to refuel.

If you are a leader and you have the mindset and take the position that I don’t need to rest, YOLO and I can rest when I’m in my casket… you aren’t leading.

Leading on empty! No such thing. If you stay on empty, you are no more than puttering around on fumes  all while putting yourself and everyone around you at risk of a train wreck.

What You Should Do When The People Around You Don’t Believe In You

believe2Belief in people is of paramount importance as it relates to the success that they will have. As a matter of fact, believing in others is the fuel that propels them down the road to success.

What should you do when those around you don’t believe in you?  

You should find a different group of people to surround yourself with. If the people that don’t believe in you are friends and family, limit your interactions with them, tell them they’re wrong and more importantly believe n yourself and prove them wrong.

You tend to become who those closest and most important to you think you will become. Choose those that are most important and closest to you wisely.
