Some time ago, I remember taking a trip to Nashville. While in Nashville, I had the opportunity to have lunch with the former CEO and Now Chairman of The Board of Thomas Nelson Publishing Michael Hyatt.

Not only was Michael the CEO of Thomas Nelson, he’s an avid blogger and Social Media enthusiast. In my opinion he’s one of the best in the business as it relates to high-level CEO leaders understanding the “how to” and the “importance of” leveraging social media for their organization and building of their personal brand.

During the course of our conversation we talked publishing, leadership, a little politics and all things social media. As we were talking we both agreed on the implications of Twitter and how it’s changed the view of people. By changing the view of people, I’m referring to the fact that Twitter let’s you view people in 3D. Grab your 3D Glasses and let me explain.

I came up with these 3 particular dimensions of Twitter that in my opinion are the key elements in understanding what Twitter is all about — what Twitter is all about from the perspective of leverage, influence, relationships and connection.

Twitter allows us to see people in the following 3 Dimensions: Personal, Professional & Thought.

1. Personal Dimension- The Personal Dimension is the dimension of Twitter where individuals share things about life and family, and is filled with many twitpics, yfrogs and LOL’s. This is the dimension of Twitter where personality really pops out to the world of Twitter. This dimension is most important and sets the tone for how the other two dimensions come into focus.

2. Professional Dimension- The Professional Dimension is the dimension that allows you to share expertise, experiences, thoughts, visions, trends, happenings… in your area of professionalism. This is the dimension where the social media professional shares all things social media, the doctor shares all things medicine, the stay-at-home mom shares all things mommy, the pastor shares all things ministry and so on. The personal and professional dimension will definitely have some overlap.

The professional dimension is the dimension where business twitter accounts should always remain. It’s not pragmatic for business twitter accounts to share information from the personal dimension. I other-words @starbucks should not be tweeting about mowing the lawn, unless they are mowing the lawn and drinking a cup of Starbucks. Starbucks should be tweeting about all things Starbucks Coffee and all things Starbucks Coffee Customers. Unfortunately, some business twitter accounts get this one wrong all the time.

It’s important to understand that your followers may view your professional dimension a little broader than your professional role. For instance Michael Hyatt is not just viewed as the CEO of Thomas Nelson, but also as a Social Media Expert, Blogger and Leadership Guru. In this dimension I am viewed as a Pastor, Blogger, Social Media Guy, Leadership Guy etc. If you want to know how the Twitter World views you, simply take a look at the categories of Twitter Lists that people have placed you in.

3. Thought Dimension- The Thought Dimension is the dimension that deals with cognition. Cognition—being the mental process of knowing, including aspects such as awareness, perception, thinking, reasoning, and judgment. This is the dimension that releases what’s going on inside of your head. This dimension is filled with random quotes, random thoughts, the sharing of information that you have read or opinions that you may have.

The Thought Dimension will have overlap with both the Personal Dimension and the Professional Dimension. I gather the most useful information from the Though Dimension. @RevRunWisdom has mastered the thought dimension. He is one of the most retweeted individuals on Twitter and 100% of his posts originate from this dimension. Again, I love to share and receive from this dimension. My life philosophy is this: dream BIG. think BIGGER.

In order for an individual to have a well-rounded and effective Twitter experience, they must be able to see Twitter In 3D. All three dimensions must be present. Personally I think a Twitter Profile should outline these three areas in order. For instance, here is how my twitter profile reads: Husband, Father, Leader, Pastor, Speaker, Consultant, Author of <s>#</s>ChurchDiversity, <s>#</s>OKC… Al Gore invented the internet and I invented the <s>#</s>FistBump on Twitter!

Now You Can See, Twitter In 3D.

What Do You Think? Share your thoughts regarding the 3 Dimensions Of Twitter.

Twitter continues to grow and be a major source of news and connection for millions of people. I remember in they early days when everyone thought it was no more than a fad. Twitter has definitely moved past the fad stage and you can’t turn on your radio or television without someone sharing their twitter handle. The same is true for all print materials and other forms of advertisements.

Twitter has many great uses and one of them is the fact that it can be used to make a difference. Earlier this year I shared an extremely popular post entitled: 50 Ways Twitter Has Positively Impacted The World. The post consists of thoughts from 50 different people in the Twittersphere and their thoughts on how Twitter Has Positive Impacted The World. Check it out here:

Today, I’m sharing 10 Ways Sharing On Twitter Can Make A Difference.

1. Share A Quote: There is something about quotes that seem to have a profound impact on people and the way they think. Take a quote that’s somewhere in the 120 character range and the impact is elevated to an even higher level, and it’s definitely more memorable. The great thing about quotes is the fact that people love to retweet them and share them. Quotes have multiplication power, due to the fact that every quote speaks to each individual differently. Here is a recent leadership quote that I shared that will speak differently to everyone who reads it: “Leadership is based on a spiritual quality; the power to inspire, the power to inspire others to follow.” – Vince Lombardi

2. Share Scripture: It’s always great to get nuggets of the living, breathing word of God in the world of Twitter. It’s also nice to learn and connect with what other individuals, leaders, pastors and organizations are reading. Not only can I share Bible verses that I’m reading, I can read countless other Bible verses in my timeline throughout the day. In case you didn’t know, Twitter Is In The Bible.

3. Share The Good Stuff: By the good stuff, I’m referring to deals, favorites, coupons, promotions, groupons, retweet-this-win-this, things that can benefit others… You know what I’m talking about, The Good Stuff.

4. Share Pictures: We’ve all heard the modern use of the old phrase “A Picture Is Worth 1,000 Words.” That phrase stems from an article by Fred R. Barnard in Printers’ Ink, promoting the use of images that appeared on the sides of streetcars. The December 1921 issue had an ad entitled, “One Look Is Worth A Thousand Words.” When it comes to sharing pics on twitter there are many photo sharing services popping up and twitter’s version of this old phrase is more like: “A picture is worth 1,000 thoughts, 1,000 views, 1,000 retweets…” The bottom line is all of the family pics., random moments, food pics, life moments, children pics., timeless moments etc. all can impact our day in a positive way. A picture is worth more than 140 characters.

5. Share Your Thoughts: This really gets back to the Twitter basics. The original Twitter question that twitter asked for your status update was, What are you doing? It has now evolved to a more appropriate question, What’s happening? Somewhere in between those two questions is the question of, What are you thinking? Humans have thousands of thoughts per day and those thoughts can have and impact on our friends in the Twittersphere. Those thoughts can make you laugh, cry, shout, scream and even make you think. For instance, comedian Michael Jr. @MichaelJrComedy tweeted this over the weekend: It’s cold at this soccer game! I know a grown man shouldn’t say this n public, but… I wish I had a snuggie. That made me laugh and smile. Yesterday, my family and I were in the car listening to an old gospel song “I’m Just A Nobody” by the Williams brothers. The entire family was singing the lyrics, laughing, worshiping, ad-libbing and having a good ol’ time. The chorus got stuck in my head, so I shared it on Twitter. Here is the chorus, “I’m just a nobody trying to tell everybody about Somebody who can save anybody!” That thought was retweeted over 100 times and counting. It’s guaranteed that the truth of those lyrics made a difference in someone’s life.

6. Share Words Of Encouragement: Public words of encouragement and/or retweets with a nice message at the end can go a long way. I say encourage and encourage often. Encourage others and challenge those that follow you to encourage others. Encouragement is the fuel that propels you down the road of success.

7. Share Great Information: Whether it’s the latest trend, newest technology release, a great book, an inspiring Seth Godin article, a Mashable find, the latest fashion trends, questions about a product, a great place to dine in a particular city or the recent release of the College Football BCS results, Twitter is definitely one of the best places to gather and share information.

8. Share A Cause: On a daily basis I’m either reading or sharing information about a great cause or charity. Twitter makes it simple for us to be helpful to those who are trying to reach a fundraising goal, get information out about a great cause or share information about a movement. The students at Penn State used Twitter as a tool to promote their “Blue Out” event at this weekends football game against Nebraska. The stadium was filled with blue in honor of and in order to bring awareness to the epidemic that is the abuse of children.

9. Share Breaking News: Twitter is a great source to share breaking news… You can almost guarantee that Twitter will be the 1st or at the latest 2nd place for breaking news. The death of Michael Jackson was trending on Twitter before the major news outlets could even catch up. The ultimate breaking news from twitter was from the Abbottabad man who unknowingly tweeted the raid and killing of Osama Bin Laden. His initial tweet was this: “Helicopter hovering above Abbottabad at 1AM (is a rare event).”

10. Share Your Lives: I am a huge believer in genuine face to face relationships; however I have embraced the tremendous value of Twitter and Social Media relationships. Social Media relationships are making the world smaller and smaller. This Big ol’ World is getting Smaller and Smaller, One Tweet, Comment and One Post at a time. It’s always important to remember the Social Part of the word Social Media. Social is defined as — The inclination to seek out or enjoy the company of others; sociable. Twitter is a great place to share your life and connect with the lives of others.

The World Of Social Media is here to stay and that has major implications for the business sector, organizations and Corporate America. There are over 220 million bloggers, over 600 million Facebook users, 175 million Twitter users and 34% of these folks post opinions about products and brands. These shared opinions are a big deal, as research shows 78% of consumers trust peer recommendations and only 14% trust advertisements.

The problem with social media advertising is that many companies don’t have a clear understanding of how to leverage social media for their business. There are a growing number of businesses whose primary focus and business model is to help organizations leverage social media and they will even do all of the social media work for the companies.

There are a growing number of businesses that seem to have a functional Social Media plan. If used correctly, Social Media can be an amazing value-add to a company. There is definitely more than one way to skin the Business Social Media Cat; however it’s important to employ a method that makes sense.

Here are 7 Ways Businesses Should Leverage Social Media

1. Develop A Plan- The old proverb of those who fail to plan, plans to fail is definitely true when it comes to businesses and social media. Develop a plan that starts with the end result in mind. Do you have a desire to promote offers, promotions and coupons? If so how are you going to do it. Are you going to make Social Media the main communication hub for your customers, how are you co-branding your social media platform with your existing brand.

Developing a plan takes time, energy and research. Take your time, develop a plan or hire someone to help you with the plan before you get jump in and get started. If you have already begun, you should assess your existing plan and re-engage with the new plan. Abraham Lincoln says it this way, “If I had 8 hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend 6 hours sharpening my ax.”

2. Know Your Voice- This is the golden rule as it pertains to Social Media. If you are speaking on behalf of John Q Organization, make sure that you speak from that voice. Businesses tend to confuse or overlap the voice of their personal brand with their business brand.

If you are tweeting or posting Facebook updates for your Coffee Shop, you should not be tweeting about mowing your grass, unless of course you are mentioning that it’s time to have a nice cup of Joe afterwards. An easy solution to make sure your business voice is the one speaking is to ask this question before posting — If my company could tweet or post, would they share this?

3. Be Social- The most important thing about social media is the social part and not the media. If you look @Starbucks and @Southwestair Twitter streams, they are always interacting with customers and people. One of the best organizations in the country that appropriately leverages the aspect of being social is @KCIAirport. These guys are brilliant, if you want to see how you can be social, handle customer concerns and build a social media brand by doing the basics. Check them out! Be Social, Be Accessible, Be Social, Be Relevant, Be Social, Be Authentic, Be Social, Be Real, Be Social, Be about Your Brand, Be Social, Be Entertaining, Be Social and did I mention BE SOCIAL!

The statistics that I shared in the beginning of this post about 78% of customers trust peer recommendations drives home the importance of being social. I think that research could be extended to say that people are more likely to trust and promote brands they feel connected to. Be Social!

4. Make A Name For Yourself- This is a two-part solution. 1.) Make sure that your Twitter and Facebook names are simple, easy to remember and relevant to your company. 2.) Make a name for your company by being active in the world of social media. Have tweet-ups at your place, provide social-media only specials, have promotions that demand viral interaction and be creative. @dealsplus has done a great job of demanding online viral interaction. It does not matter if your company is large, small, on-line, or has a physical location, you can Make A Name For Yourself. Familiarizing yourself with the 111 Twitter Tools will help you to become efficient at making a name for yourself.

5. Make Your Profile Work- Make sure your Twitter and Facebook profile represent your company. If your business is a coffee shop be sure to have your logo as your profile pic. and not your personal glamour shot. Check out my 6 Ways To Make Your Twitter Profile Work.

6. Have a Primary Social Media Application- The cool thing about the success of Twitter is that Facebook and Twitter have become kissing cousins. There are many applications that automate the connection of the two platforms. Although I encourage the multi-updates in both spaces, it is helpful to focus on one platform as your primary. For me personally, my primary is Twitter, although every single tweet goes to my Facebook community.

It is great for a business to encourage their customers to connect with them on multiple Social Media medians; however having one or the other as a primary helps with clarity. Imagine your company as bi-lingual. The question is: Is your company’s native language Twitterese or Facebookese etc.? Answer that question and speak that language to your customers.

7. Make It Fun- No matter the strategy you choose, make it fun for your customers. Fun, engaging, enlightening… should be the words your customers use to describe your social media presence. This isn’t necesarrily “crack jokes” fun, but it’s definitely not blah blah blah boring.

The bottom line is that Social Media can definitely be a benefit to every business and business owner. Use It, Try It, Be It, Become A Fan Of It, Study It, Know It, Become Good At Leveraging It. In the future, “It” Can Make or Break Your Company.

“It” Is Social Media!

What do you think? What companies do a great job of leveraging Social Media? Share your thoughts.

This post will get straight to the point… If you want to get Re-Tweeted, Implement These Top 10 Ways To Get Re-Tweeted Below:

1. SPACE - Leave 18-20 characters available in your tweet… allows enough room for your name @ sign and RT. This is the most common reason people will not RT your post, individuals don’t want to take the time and energy to remove characters and shorten your post. TIME IS MONEY!

2. CONTENT – Tweet content that provides value to a broad audience — quotes, humor, questions, compelling thoughts, breaking news, technology, social media breakthroughs, tips, links to great content etc. CONTENT IS KING!

3. CONSISTENCY – Make sure your tweets are consistent. Think of your tweets in a similar fashion that you look at newspaper or magazine subscription. Your followers will learn to trust and grow to expect a particular type of content in a consistently delivered manner. CONSISTENCY COUNTS!

4. TACTFUL - Have a keen sense of what to tweet and what not to tweet in order to maintain good relationships with your twitter community. Don’t consistently ask your Twitter Community to Re-Tweet your tweet… If you feel that the tweet or content is valuable, it may make sense to ask selective followers to RT a tweet. If you ask all of your followers to RT your content all of the time, your message will fall on deaf ears. HAVE SOME MANNERS!

5. RECIPROCATE – Give and receive value to the Twitter community. Re-tweet other’s tweets if you find their information valuable and be sure that you provide them the RT credit they deserve. Don’t be a Re-Tweetaholic or once again your message will fall on deaf ears. SHARE THE LOVE!

6. BRAND - Develop a consistent Twitter brand, presence, notoriety, content etc. desirable of being Re-Tweeted. Many people have put the time energy and effort to earn the right for their content to be Re-Tweeted. If you look at theTop 50 Re-tweeted Twitter Users Of All Time the one thing that’s consistent is that they all have their own unique brand. GET BRANDED!

7. RECOGNITION - Get recognized or develop a relationship with the people on the Top 50 Re-Tweeted Twitter Users Of All Time. :) Seriously you don’t have to develop a relationship with people on that list; however having your content re-tweeted by folks with a strong Twitter brand will help with future RT’s. GET RECOGNIZED!

8. LISTS - Believe it or not being on the right Twitter List can increase your ability to be re-tweeted. People utilize their lists to keep the people they want to hear from front and center. Lists can be as important on the Retweetometer as the number of followers. Lists are a great measure of content value. GET LISTED!

9. REPEAT - Repeat #1. This is by far the most important aspect of being re-tweeted and often times the most over-looked. Leave at least 18 characters, if you can leave 36 that’s even better… you have potentially doubled your chances. SPACE IS KEY!

10. BLOG ABOUT IT – Write a simple blogpost about How To Get Re-Tweeted. In all seriousness write about Twitter or Social Media – People in the wold of Social Media love to share content about Social Media. TOPIC MATTERS!

Bonus: Your name is Rev Run aka @revrunwisdom

Social media has well eclipsed the thought that it is just a fad; it is more like cotton – the fabric of our lives. Social Media is not simply new media… it’s the media. It’s the chosen form of media of the people. If a business wants to be successful they have to be where the people are and the people are on social media.

It doesn’t matter if you’re in the business of selling trinkets, pancakes, books, gas, financial services, phones, hamburgers or cars… Your customers are on social media and that’s where you need to be. Many of them are reading this post from their mobile device. They want to hear from you, they want to find you and more importantly they want to share the good, bad and ugly about you with their tribe. Social media has allowed ordinary Joe to have a mom and pop type connection with their favorite brands, products and businesses through Twitter and other forms of Social Media.

If a company is not on social media they are failing bigger than a pregnant Twitter Fail Whale and that’s BIG. Businesses need to have a social media presence just for the sake of being able to know what people are saying about them and their products. Like it or not people are talking about your business, they are talking the good stuff, bad stuff and ugly stuff. Not only are they talking but their friends and followers are listening.

Research shows that 78% of consumers trust peer recommendations and only 14% trust advertisements. For that reason, every business should have someone that understands social media (consultant or in-house) assigned and responsible for their social media presence.

I remember traveling to Florida this summer and had a layover at KCI, Kansas City International Airport. If you have ever been to KCI you know that it is very tight (not cool, but small). You have to leave outside of security to get food, other than a few little kiosk like stands. While I was at KCI, I tweeted an honest but somewhat negative tweet, my tweet was this: “Kansas City might have some good BBQ, but they need to work on this airport captivity, can’t leave, must re-enter through security airport!” I also tweeted, “Kansas City airport is like a prison once you get through security… You’re Locked Down.”

Shortly after my tweet went out, I received a twitter response from @kciairport that read as follows: “@scottwilliams our design is not ideal for transiting pax. Working to increase avail concessions in gate areas. Please enjoy our Free Wifi.” I loved the quick response and the fact that they directly addressed my concern as a customer. It immediately changed my thoughts about the Kansas City International Airport. I felt compelled to share my change of heart with my Social Media Tribe. I tweeted this response, “Big #FistBump to @KCIAirport for having free wifi & a social media crew that responds to customers. Awesome! Others should learn from this.”

The fact that the Kansas City International Airport had a viable social media presence saved their brand from a black eye and ended up adding value to their business. If they didn’t have a great social media presence, those pregnant fail whale thoughts of mine would still be actively swimming around in the online waters of Twitter and Facebook. Not to mention that 78% of my social media friends would agree with me and have similar thoughts.

Some Businesses Are #Winning With Social Media… While Others #Fail!

Do your favorite brands and businesses have a viable Social Media Presence? Share your thoughts and experiences.

The social media influencer has to lead purely through relational, cause and content equity. There is no positional equity, hierarchical leadership or formal boss. The social media influencer has to answer this daily question for their followers: “Why should I listen to, or follow you?” In other words, what are you providing that makes people want to follow you; especially when there are thousands of others who are only a click away.

Social Media Influence is not simply about the numbers but rather about value. @Oprah has nearly 6 million followers on Twitter, however she wasn’t a social media influencer until recent months. She didn’t start actively tweeting until @MCHammer showed her the value and potential of Twitter when he appeared on her show. He showed her how to extend and leverage her influence to the world of social media. MC Hammer is a big-time social media influencer and even owns several companies that deal with aspects of social media. @Oprah definitely had potential, but so does every single person in the world of Social Media. Remember This – Potential unrealized is just potential. MC Hammer helped Oprah to reach her potential.

On the other hand @revrunwisdom is probably one of the most influential individuals on Twitter. If he’s not the most influential, he’s definitely at the top of any list. He is the most re-tweeted Twitter user of all-time. Why is Rev Run so influential? It’s quite simple, he provides daily value to every single person in his twitter stream. He has found his unique voice, which happens to be sharing consistent daily morsels of wisdom. This is an extension of what he did for years prior to joining Twitter at the end of his TV Show Run’s House. He would close out his show with a quote typed onto his blackberry and end with a “God Is Love… ~Rev Run.”

Actress @Alyssa_Milano is a social media influencer, not because she is an actress but rather because she adds tons of value by sharing relevant content, promoting causes, sharing her life and being herself. Pastor @shaunking is a social media influencer, he started an organization that leverages social media for social good for those in need around the globe. The list of influencers goes on and on…

5 Ways To Be Recognized as A Social Media Influencer:

1.) Can You See What I’m Saying? Find your voice. Your online voice should be a natural overflow of your IRL (In Real Life) voice. They should not be mutually exclusive, but rather one in the same.

2.) When You Look At Me Who Do You See? Don’t try to be a copycat or phony. Authenticity is crucial, so Keep it Real! “Do You! It’s A Statement… Not A Question.”

3.) Can I See You? Be accessible, helpful, respond to tweets, write a guest post for someone, remember that your online influence is based upon those who choose to follow or connect with you. Key word… choose, social media is all about choices. @RevRunWisdom is a rare breed when it comes to interaction and following, he doesn’t follow anyone. Accessibility is important, but not paramount See #2. (Be yourself.)

4.) Can You See My Muscles? Be willing to flex your Social Media muscle by tackling the tough issues, helping worthy causes and adding overall value to the online community.

5.) Can You See Me? People can’t follow you if you don’t give them anything to follow. Just like the newspaper, you need to deliver regular content. You don’t have to be hyperactive, just active. Write something, tweet something, share something! @oprah‘s nearly 6 million followers had probably forgotten that she even existed before she started actively tweeting. I mean forgot about her only from a Social Media perspective. Her worldwide and new television influence will continue to be exponentially multiplied with her engagement of her social media community.

Ellen DeGeneres or @theellenshow does a great job at all of the above.

Who influences you in the world of Social Media and why? Share your thoughts or other ways to be recognized as a social media influencer.

Right now I’m typing this while I’m riding down the highway in Atlanta. I’m not driving but I’m riding (blogging while driving is a better title). I’ve been so busy I had to go ahead and download the wordpress iPhone app so I could stay current with my BigIsTheNewSmall.com peeps.

I have about an hour ride to the Gwinnett Center to do a book signing and speak at the #Orange Conference. If you want details about the conference look at the advertisement over to the right.

It’s crazy how many things we can do while we’re mobile. As soon as I got off of the tram at Atlanta Airport there were 2 ladies holding up traffic in front of me as they were texting while walking.

I’m blogging while riding, the guy I just looked at in the black convertible mustang next to me is texting while driving, many of you are reading this while walking, going or doing something.

I need make time to write a blogpost titled I’m doing absolutely nothing and the body of the post to be blank.

Be Still!

Is our forever connectedness and doingness (made up word) a good thing or a bad thing?

The Twitter Effect On Blogging:

Less Comments- The overall number of comments on blogs cab be reduced due to the Twitter Effect. Many blog readers are driven to blogposts via tweets, therefore creating an extra click, which mentally can be perceived as what would have been a click to the comment section. Blog readers will make a comment on a post through their retweet, instead of inside the comment section i.e. (Check out this post… great read, must read, I totally agree with this blogpost, great twitter tips, reading The Twitter Effect On Blogging etc.)

More Exposure- Any blog can receive maximum exposure if the blogger produces consistently good content. Each post is just a retweet away from a high profile Twitterer getting a hold to it and sharing it with their followers. The ability to push blog content into the twittersphere is a total game changer. I had one Twitter Tip post retweeted by actress @ alyssa_milano, @mayhemstudios, @guykawasaki and@ twitter_tips that resulted in over 600+ readers on my blog at one time. Ability to push blogposts, results in the ability to get exposed, in a good way.

More Comments- This is a distant cousin to the previous point of Less Comments. Due to more exposure and more interaction the Twitter Effect On Blogging can create a more robust blogging community, over time or some times instantly resulting in more comments. This isn’t a contradiction of Less Comments, it’s simply a reality of the Twitter Effect.

Less Use Of RSS Readers & Blog Aggregators- The fact that many bloggers share their latest blogposts via twitter has minimized the need to hit-up the RSS reader. Since it’s somewhat difficult to keep up with the flow of all tweets; blog readers will still check out their RSS feed, just not as often. Twitter lists ad go

More Unique Readers: Retweets create instant exposure to unique “tribes” as Seth Godin refers to them. In other words the multiplication factor of retweets creates opportunities to be exposed to a very unique and diverse group of readers that would otherwise never have visited John Q Blog.

I could go on and on about the More and Less Effects that Twitter has had on blogging. The bottom line is that The Twitter Effect On Blogging has been More Positive and Less Negative. Keep blogging, write consistently good content, share your posts with the twittersphere and The Twitter Effect On Blogging will take care of itself.

Share your thoughts and experiences as it relates to “The Twitter Effect On Blogging.”
